Product Description

Product Packaging: Standard Packaging

INTUITIVE INTERFACE: The Forté-AP allows you to dose by weight or time. Our signature dose-by-weight is accurate to plus or minus .2 gram. The touch activation awakens your screen with LED backlit technology. The touch screen controls all operations with three programmable dose presets; Up or Down arrows to increase or decrease dose values; and TARE, MANUAL, START or STOP.

ESPRESSO DOSING: A unique feature of the Forté-AP is the ability to convert a weight preset into a timed value that is accurate within plus or minus .5 grams of the set point. This allows for weight oriented dosing for espresso.

BURRS: The Forté-AP grinder comes with 54mm ceramic flat burrs for accurate and precise grinding. The Forté-AP grinds at an average of 2.0g/sec for espresso and 3.5 to 3.7g/sec for press pot. The range of grind is 230 to 1150 microns.

ADUSTMENT/GRIND RANGE: An all-metal macro and micro adjustment system produces a positive feel and secure grind setting. The macro-adjust moves from fine to coarse grinding in 10 distinct and repeatable settings. A secondary micro-adjust further divides each of the 10 macro steps into 26 distinct settings. These steps, plus the new metal detents, enable fine-tuning with ease.

HOPPER: The hopper holds approximately 300g of coffee. An innovative bean shutoff feature in the collar permits no-mess, no-fuss hopper removal for changing out beans. Bean "waste" (below the stopper) averages a surprisingly low 10g, once the hopper has been shut off (all weights are bean density dependent). A hopper extension is available that can add an additional 250g of capacity.

RE-CALIBRATING BURRS: The Forté-AP is calibrated at the factory to ensure an accurate range of grind. If necessary, the Forté-AP burrs can be easily re-calibrated using the special calibration tool that comes with the grinder.

I received this grinder as a Christmas present and have been using it every day for the last 3 months. To be clear, this is an extremely expensive grinder for home use. In fact, Baratza markets it as a capable machine for smaller cafés and I'd have to agree. It's by far the very best grinder I've had in my home, though even at its price it's not perfect, hence the 4 stars.

It's built like a tank, looks great, feels great, and works great.

There are a slew of excellent features on this machine. First, there is a built in scale so that as you grind you can measure doses in grams, accurate to .1 gram. That's saved me a whole step every morning because I used to have to measure out a dose of beans in a little bowl on my AWS scale, then pour them into the hopper, then grind them. Now, a single press on the touch screen starts grinding a perfectly measured dose.

The touch screen also functions to get the unit in and out of standby as there's no on/off switch. You tap the touch screen once and it lights up. A second tap on any of the on screen buttons starts the grinding.

Next, there are presets for either time grinding or weight grinding, 3 of each in fact. I can preset it for a 35 gram dose for a pour over into my large travel mug, or a 20 or 25 gram dose for a perfect espresso shot. I can also set 3 different time grinds for long or short bursts as needed. There is also a manual grind button - as long as you keep pressing, the Forte keeps grinding.

The unit can be ordered with either ceramic or metal burrs, which are pretty easy to swap (Baratza offers a helpful how to video), and calibration is also fairly simple if/as needed. For grind size, there are two sliders, one coarse (large steps) one fine (smaller steps).

This grinder is a solid 5 star unit. I know there's word about static in reviews, but I see no issues at all. I do grind only my own fresh roasted beans, thus likely have slightly higher moisture content. The resolution of the step adjustments is perfect. A few clicks north or south of the fine adjustment gets me dialed right in. It's quiet (within reason) and fairly quick. The scale lands me perfectly measured doses every time - it's great having two variables under complete control (dose and grind management). Two thumbs up on this unit.

Update - I had one of those 'user induced' issues with my Forte - now almost 2 years after purchase. After contacting customer service via e-mail, not only did they take great care of me, they got me up and running in no time. A few days later, I got my parts needed, and started grinding espresso once again. Great service!

I use it for 100% fresh roasted beans, only for espresso grind. It's used at least 5 days a week on the weight function. Since I grind by weight, I simply set the grams for a tad over my porta-filter's needs. Pour from the buck into my porta-filter (over a sink), and sweep off the small amount of excess w/ my finger. Minimum waste and easy. If I need to adjust the grind (as my beans age, or change batches), it's a simply click (while grinding), and the next pour is accurately adjusted.

I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome of my grinder..

What a difference a good grinder makes, I've been enjoying my coffee so much more. It stays on the counter where I put it, it is easy to clean, and so much quieter than the so called "quite" ones I replaced it with.
It was a challenge to justify the cost, but well worth it.
I've been roasting my own coffee (I do need to watch carefully for small pebbles) for about 6 months now and brew with reusable K cups (it's just quicker), an espresso machine, as well as a chemex and/or french press for larger groups. It has proven easy to adjust the grind for one method and return it to the next. The challenge of course is drinking all the coffee I make while dialing in the right grind for each method.

I upgraded to the Forte from Baraza' Vario. With the Forte, every shot pours at the exact same pressure. (Machine: Expobar Brewtus 4.) The shots are much more consistent than they were with the Vario.

My only complaint - beans remain on a flat ring around the perimeter of the base of the hopper. I dose by weight (18 grams of beans / shot.) So the only way to ensure all the beans gring is to brush them off the ring at the bottom of the hopper during grinding.

After I come up with fix for that, it will be my last grinder.

04.06.15 Edited to change to 5 starts. Baratza's tech support is top-notch! I emailed them about the "beans stay in the hopper" issue, and they replied with a link to a regular style (non-shutoff) hopper:

I have had this grinder about a month and could not be happier. I place the filter holder into the grinder and grind for 8.7 seconds ... consistent grind quality and consistent quantity of coffee. It took a little bit of practice/waste to get to the right setting (E on the left and 2 on the right) for my espresso maker but now I can make the perfect cup of espresso by reflex and muscle memory ... no conscious thought required. The exterior is almost exclusively cast aluminum (with the exception of the base). It's well designed and a great buy so far.
