About Barbara Studham
For over twenty years I have parented four grandchildren with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS): a disorder caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. While raising grandchildren with FAS, the temptation to run from the struggles invading my world was significant. Despite my grandchildren's strengths, their FAS caused severe behavioral issues, eventually overwhelming my parenting abilities, which resulted in a breakdown of the family unit I had fought so hard to maintain. My two memoirs, Two Decades of Diapers, and, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: The Teen Years, highlight my struggles throughout those years; my daughter's teen pregnancies; how I became a grandmother raising grandchildren with FASD, and the crises, shattered dreams, and strength and love my grandchildren, and I, share. Through my perception of the disorder I have created a children's full-color, picture book, titled, Strawberry & Cracker: Twins with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The two main characters are Strawberry and Cracker, who have a diagnosis of FAS. The first book in the series is titled, THE SCHOOL DAY, and shines light upon the challenges and supports children with FASD experience at school. Strawberry & Cracker is designed to fulfill several needs: to offer children with FASD a fun picture book highlighting daily challenges they can relate to; to help children with FASD accept their diagnosis with dignity and self-respect; to offer caregivers a tool with which to introduce their child with FASD to the disorder, and to bring awareness of FASD to the public. On a lighter note, I write fiction and fiction series. Fiction writing allows me to let loose and create plots, relationships, settings, and so much more. I can make the characters appealing or murderous, whichever takes my fancy. The majority of my fiction falls into the genre of cozy/amateur sleuth/adventure, including my six-book fiction series, Under The Shanklin Sky.
