The stories that stand out are the ones by Leiber, Anderson and Howard; the bad ones are by Effinger and Mayhar (and for once, Lin Carter has a decent story that isn't completely predictable). This collection is superior to its sequel, Barbarians II. However, not every story involves barbarians, so the title is somewhat deceptive (Nary a barbarian is to be found in "Swords Against the Marluk", for instance); also, some of the stories involve barbarians, but they are the villains, and have no speaking roles, which is the opposite of expectations ("Age of the Warrior", and "Vault of Silence" are two).
