It actually gets better from that point on. They took the time and thought to put the outfits together so the child will open each day to complete the look for that career. The first up is the ballerina and then the ice skater (these two share the leotard as part of their outfit.) Next is the pet doctor and then the baker (these two share the pink dress as part of their outfit.) Finally, is the skier. The clothes for the skier follow the translucent pink eye wear but Barbie will still have on her pink dress, so she can still be played with. All of the pieces look like the photos on the promo and on the outside of the calendar
The doll is partially articulated with points at neck, hips, elbows and wrists. I do wish that Mattel had used the Made to Move body with articulation at the upper torso, knees and ankles which would have made the set even better. Barbie has blonde hair is a side-swept ponytail with blue eyes, pink lips and light tan skin tone.
The clothes are a decent quality. Not great but okay. I had problems with the skier outfit having an partially unfinished seam but a couple of stitches fixed that. The pink dress is fairly simple and had a few hanging threads. All of the clothes either pull on or close with hook and loop except for the apron. The apron has to be tied with a bow at the back which makes it a little difficult for little ones to do on their one. Hook and loop would have been a better choice.
The plastic accessories are all quite nice. I thought the quality and fit of almost all were really great. The exception, for me, was the pink pumps. I could not get them to stay on Barbie's feet. As they are part of two outfits, that makes it tough. I can swap out the shoes for other pink ones that I have on hand but it might be a little frustrating for a child if this is a problem with all sets and not just mine.
The advent calendar comes with a clear shrink-wrap that I do recommend you remove. The reason is that there is a removable piece of cardboard at the back of the calendar which shows all the pieces included. If you want the items to be a big surprise, I recommend removing both the shrink-wrap and the cardboard. The rest of the calendar if sealed fairly well and is next to impossible to open from the sides without doing damage to the box and the plastic insert holding the prizes (which is glued throughout to the inside of the box.)
I took mine apart to take pictures so you won't have to do so. I was able to take it apart and package it back up carefully without it looking too shabby. My granddaughter will be opening this set and playing with it at my house with Nana as we are the big Barbie location (I picked up a Playmobil set to give her at her house.) I am sure she will be thrilled with each day as she opens it up.
* Ice Blue ballet outfit with toe shoes and a tiara
* Pink dress with chef hat, apron, pink heels, a muffin tin, and a plate of cookies
* Vet coat (to be worn over the pink dress?), stethoscope, clipboard, doggie dish, and Husky puppy
* Purple skirt (worn with bodysuit from ballet ensemble), ice skates, skating trophy
* Ski suit, ski goggles, ski helmet, ski boots, ski poles, and skis
The tight ski suit, as well as the vet coat was difficult for my girls to put on, because they sleeves/legs were so tight/small. Every time they took one of those outfits off of the Barbie, I would have to help them turn it back inside out, which got old quickly. However, my girls were delighted with the outfits and accessories and have played with them daily since they received it.
There are two problems I have with this product. First, the ski outfit and vet coat were difficult to put on (but not impossible, thanks to the bendable arms/wrists) and removing them almost always resulted in the outfit being inside out, which in turn required an adult to turn the outfit back right side out.
Secondly, the "doors" to the box were very difficult for my children to open, there were only two or three that they managed to open without my assistance. Several of the doors would not open without tearing the area around the opening. Additionally, some of the items (muffin tin, dog bowl, and cookie plate) required me to use a butter knife to pop them out of the plastic backing. It could be that the difficulty in opening the doors, etc is a fluke and only applies to my product, and I hope that is the case. Otherwise, an adult should be ready to assist younger children with opening this.
The doll cannot bend her knees so their choice if skier profession is questionable, as she looks funny on the skis with the straight knees. She can bend her elbows and wrists. The hair is nice and soft.
The "doors" are relatively easy to open except for the ones in the top row since there was a thick corrugated cardboard going along the sides of the box inside to prevent it from crushing, and the cardboard is under where you supposed to press down to open the compartment.
As usual, Mattel chose girly professions for Barbie, no scientists, coders or engineers in sight. Drivers? Space explorers? Nah, go to the kitchen, woman, and bake something. Or dance to entertain the man.
