The toy of the future

I'm not sure other reviewers appreciate how brilliant this is. It's a working video camera that shoots video akin to the quality you'd find from high end digital cameras a few years ago, all from a tiny camera embedded in a Barbie doll's chest!

The potential is fantastic, tapping into a new way for children to tell their stories and engage in imaginary play. Imagine getting a Barbie's Eye View of her dream house or her date with Ken. It adds another layer of possibilities to make these playworlds come alive for those participating in them.

Some reviewers are concerned, but I wonder if they're the same reviewers who would just as easily give their pre-teen or young teenage children phones with working video cameras. It's just as difficult to tell what they're doing with those phones and who they're sharing photos and videos with. That doesn't mean these devices should be banned. It means parents and caretakers need to teach their children what's appropriate. Little girls could set Barbie's hair on fire too, but most parents would say they've instilled enough of a sense of right and wrong in their kids to make sure that doesn't happen.

As for educational value, it's tremendous. Children - boys and girls alike - need to have a working familiarity with technology today. Transferring videos with the hot pink (hot pink!) USB cable is fairly easy, but also takes a bit of technological prowess. It takes a little more learning to figure out how to upload such videos to YouTube, Facebook, or anywhere else. You can do this with Barbie's software, or with other programs like Picasa (that works great for me). There are some drawbacks, such as sound quality that is subpar to the video quality and battery casing that requires a screwdriver, but still, this is a $45 toy and video camera hybrid, so it's impressive for what it is.

All in all, I'm impressed with the new direction toys are heading in. I'm sure it's scary for those whose most sophisticated toy growing up was a Slinky. In her own way though, Barbie Video Girl will inspire young girls and empower them to embrace technology, learn from it, and expand their storytelling horizons.

We got this doll for our five year old for Christmas. She is cute and comes wearing stylish clothing and shoes. Even the upload cable is cute and pink. The video quality is much better than I expected after reading the reviews, and indoors it does well in normal lighting. I was surprised because I had read that you couldn't see video unless it was taken outdoors. So, overall it's fun and a good product. The problem was that she got the doll on Christmas and took videos in the morning. She took some video of our drive to her auntie's house. When we got there it had a low battery sign. She took a few minutes of video there and it was dead. We replaced the batteries. She has left it laying around most of the time, but has picked it up for a couple minutes at a time since then and taken a couple videos. The battery is dead again. We use high quality name brand batteries, but for this I may just stock up on dollar store ones that she can use so they aren't so expensive. It is also a pain to change the batteries as there is one in each upper inner thigh and you have to remove two covers with a philips screwdriver. No biggy, but it is a little time consuming. Overall, I'm glad I purchased it because my daughter loves it, but I wish it came with a charger.

The Barbie Video Girl is definitely a fun, different toy. You have to watch out for a 7 year old with a video camera, though she's having lots of fun sneaking up on us with it. The battery life is a bit low - we've already had to change the batteries once, and the doll does not charge at the computer like an ipod or camera - you have to use regualar AAA batteries. There is no audio, only video, although you can add audio to movies using the software on the Barbie website. This would be something an older girl might have fun with - for now we're just playing back movies and watching them on the small screen on the back of the doll.

The vendor that we received this doll from needs to package the product better - the box was not well sealed, there was one piece of newspaper for packing and so the box was a little beaten up. Next time I will buy directly from Mattel.

My daughter wanted this toy in Christmas 2012. It sits on my desk. It's a clever spy toy. I actually use it more than my girl does. I am trying to be a little funny here. My kids love Barbies but this one seems to stay with me. It was an expensive Barbie. I think it was $40. It has a small video screen on her back and a tiny camera as part of her belly that looks like part of her shirt. She has a USB port to connect to the computer. So anyway, she sits on my desk and she is my secret spy toy. Cute and stealthy, but expensive for what it is.

I really liked the Barbie video girl. It is a very neat doll but it is also a video camera. Most people don't realize it is a video camera. I thought it was educational because you can learn how to make good videos.

It comes with instructions on how to download video editing software from the Barbie website. The software is really fun because you are able to add graphics and special effects and titles. It also can randomly assemble video clips taken and create a film. I really like that feature!

This doll works good inside, but works better outside in bright light.
It picks up your voice as long as your not to far away or talking to softly.

So far after 2 months it is still working well, although I am careful with it. The plastic seems to be better quality than a normal Barbie.

Amazon come sempre inappuntabile per tempi di consegna. L'articolo e' confezionato in modo da resistere all'Apocalisse, e ci vuole molta pazienza per liberare la Barbie dal decine di laccetti, ma in ogni caso il prodotto e' giunto integro e protetto.
La bambola e' molto bella e di ottima fattura, nello standard della Mattel. L'idea e' molto originale e si presta ad essere un regalo di sicuro effetto. Purtroppo lo schermo posteriore e' al limite della leggibilita' ed estremamente sgranato. Collegando la bambola con il cavo usb in dotazione, ad esempio ad un televisore o ad un pc, le cose non migliorano: video di qualita' scarsa e audio poco definito. Ovviamente non si poteva pretendere molto di piu', viste le dimensioni e il prezzo (che comunque sfiora i 40 euro a fronte di una qualita' video da cellulare di 10 anni fa).
