The Barbie Designable Hair Extension Pack with Doll provides a creative way for children and teens to experiment and create unique new hairstyles for both Barbie and themselves. This kit includes a Barbie, six hair clips and 16 hair extensions, ideal for sharing with friends. Hair extensions are designed online using the Hair Extensions Designer, and can be printed using any inkjet printer for hours of imaginative play.
Design and Print Using the Hair Extensions Designer
The Barbie Designable Hair Extensions kit allows girls ages six and up to create personalized hair extensions and print them out using any inkjet printer. The process starts online at Barbie's website, where girls can design their own customized look using the Hair Extensions Designer. The interactive website features music and sound effects while you design, and offers a diverse choice of cool patterns, colors, and icons to mix and match. You can even upload your own images to create your own personalized style. Drag and drop elements onto the extension, then adjust size, rotate, and add and delete layers until you have the desired combination. With hundreds of designs to choose from, the possibilities are endless.
Our testers found the website easy to use for preteens and older. Younger children may need adult supervision. The designing process is enjoyable as a solo project or with friends.
Wear and Share Your New Designs
After finishing the design, place the special hair paper into your inkjet printer to bring your design to life. Once printing is complete, peel the extension off and attach it to one of the clips included in the kit--there are four comb clips and two star clips. Clip an extension into your own hair, share one with a friend, and clip one into Barbie's hair. Our testers found the hair extensions were surprisingly soft to the touch and made from a fine, silky material.
Creative Way to Experiment with New Styles
The Barbie Designable Hair Extensions kit allows girls to experiment with hair extensions safely with no commitment. Girls will enjoy experimenting with graphic design, and then styling their Barbies' hair with the extensions.
Includes Fashion-Conscious Barbie Doll
This kit includes a Barbie that complements the hair extension kit. With a permanent pink and black leopard streak in her blond hair, black sequin top, and hot pink pants, this Barbie will look fashionable wearing your hair extension creations.
Recommended requirements for operation of the website are an Intel 2.0 GHz processor, at least 1024 MB of RAM, at least 128 MB of graphics memory, and Adobe Flash 10 Player (required). The website is compatible with both PCs and Macs. Hair extensions are not compatible with laser printers.

Since my daughter and her friend are only first graders, they needed my help with this `project'. The designing is done online and with multiple options to choose from, the kids were happily engaged in choosing a design they liked. Just follow the instructions, print, peel off, and clip onto the doll's hair or a child's, and that's it. I do have to say that the hair extensions feel like real hair, nice and soft!
It is a novel idea, and kept them occupied for some time, but honestly at this age, their attention span is quite limited, and they were soon off doing other things. Older girls might get more out of this. It is a cute idea though and a fun, creative project for girls.
My daughter actually got onto the Barbie site herself. She poked through the designs before I even got around to it. So once I popped on, she was a pro. I was super impressed as she found the site, clicked through to the hair designing part and started going for it. She clicked on 4 different prints, resized and places each one. Then she found an icon that was a pink heart and resized and placed 2 of them. When she has finally finished a hair extension for both her and the Barbie, it was my job to load the paper, which is made extra easy with big, red arrows pointing you toward the correct way to load the printer.
We crossed our fingers, clicked print and waited. IT WAS FAST! I peeled both extensions off the backing (after the 15 seconds it took to dry) and there it was, exactly like the ones she designed. The "neato" factor only lasted so long, but its pretty cool how it works.
The practical application isn't so awesome. The extensions are hard to get seated on and remain on the clips that allow you to keep them in your (of course I mean your child's) hair and the smaller version that goes into Barbie's hair. The clips don't stay in well at all, either. We both did one and then they sat on the box on the steps for a while, waiting to be taken back up to her room.Read more ›
It's a fun idea if not seamless, but in the end I do think this Barbie is overpriced. You're really not getting all that much outside of the doll for $30+. Still, if your little girl tends toward design, fashion, and arts-and-crafts type projects, then it would probably be a reasonable expense.
