My husband assembled this by himself in about 2 hours. He agrees that the directions were terrible. As he said, "no verbs," just things like "Elevator" and a useless illustration.
ADVICE: You need to have some dolls that bend at the knees (like any of the "Life in the Dreamhouse" dolls and friends), so that the dolls can sit at the couch or at the dining room table. Most other Barbie dolls only bend at the waist, and your child will have a hard time getting those to position around the furniture.
This model is slightly different from her cousins of last years but not by much. The middle floor in Ella's is blue instead of all pink. Ella was a little disappointed as she went straight for the jacuzzi to flip a switch that was not on hers, the other version makes the hung lanterns light up. Not too big a deal. The sounds were mostly the same although Ella said Kay's shower makes Barbie hum and Ella's sings a sing. So if you're wondering about these minor differences the way I was, maybe that helps! I'm sure the jacuzzi no longer lighting has something to do with water being in it, probably got safety. But who knows, I'm guessing here. I also know my niece's elevator no longer works so perhaps the newer models have better elevators.
Highly recommended to anyone who plays with or collects dolls! I wish I had a dollhouse like this when I was a little girl! Five stars!
1) Some of the plastic pieces were not quite packed right and warped in the box. They are a great, sturdy plastic which means that it was nearly impossible to reshape them. One of them was the railing by the hot tub. Luckily, it goes together okay still but is bent near the top.
2) The chandelier has some difficult wiring. It worked fine when I put it together. After a short time of the kids playing with it, it no longer works. HOWEVER, we have this Barbie house sitting on the floor. The chandelier is on the first floor. Unless you are laying on the floor and playing in the living room--which is like never--then you do not even notice it not working. Plus, it only turns on when the front door is open--which is also like never.
I read tons of review before purchasing this for my 8 year old stepdaughter for Christmas--which I got on Cyber Monday for 50% off. Woo hoo!
Mattel gets a lot of credit for making this house easy to assemble. IT ONLY GOES TOGETHER ONE WAY. The directions are pretty terrible--mostly pictures. However, once you get the pictures, no problem. It took me less than an hour to put together. It took me as long to put the stickers on as it did to put the house together. Again, you just have to follow the numbered stickers.
From another reviewer, I put the batteries in FIRST instead of last. I do not now that this was necessary for this house. The battery compartment is easily accessible in the living room.
The 10 pink pillars only go on one way -- each end has a shape on it that matches one shape in the floor. The elevator was the only thing that I had some difficulty with. Since all pieces are plastic, I was afraid to force too much and break something.
Warning for those that have little ones: this thing has a TON of tiny pieces. Like silverware and a toothbrush. I guess Barbie really needed a toothbrush. I put many of them up so that the younger siblings do not get into them AND so that I do not vacuum up her silverware.
This house has loads of fun noises and features. The toilet flushes. The light in the fridge comes on. The timer on the counter ticks. The doorbell works. When you press on the shower floor, Barbie sings. I thought that I broke the big screen TV when I pushed it down into the fireplace. I figured this was not possible. Eventually, I realized you can push the left mantel square and the tv slides back up.
This was a huge hit. It is all plastic, but well made. It seems daunting when you take it out of the box and see the bazillion pieces. But, take patience and all will be well.
Oh, I did have some difficulty with the roof as well. I just had to walk away for a few minutes and come back. Then I managed to get it together.
