Young Gen Nakaoka has survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and his story picks up as the city tries to reconstruct itself after being destroyed. Gen goes back to school, but he's more interested in rediscovering old friends who went missing soon after the bombing. They deal with the effects of those events by starting a life of crime, one of the few ways to make any money. Gen's mother and older brother deal with food and money shortages elsewhere in the city, as well as the after-effects of radiation. All of this is seen through the innocent eyes of young Gen. He's actually unrelentingly positive for someone who has seen what he's seen. While there's innocence to the book, it is combined with real political sophistication. Gen blames his own country for getting them into WWII and doesn't fall for the patriotism he sees around him. Later, he uncovers misdeeds by the Americans and their research on bodies affected by radiation. Nakazawa was a real-life Hiroshima survivor, and his experiences give this manga classic, originally published in the '70s, a powerful kick, although it reveals its age with Tezuka-inspired designs. About the Author

Nakazawa was born in Hiroshima, and was six years old when the city was destroyed by an atomic bomb in 1945. All of his family members who had not been evacuated died in the bombing, except for his mother, and an infant sister who died several weeks after the bombing. Compelled to tell his story in the memory of his family, Keiji Nakazawa is best known for his epic tragic history Barefoot Gen.

The Barefoot Gen series of 10 graphic novels tells the story of the World War II atomic bombing of Hiroshima Japan through the eyes of a young boy Gen Nakaoka who relates the events lived through by the author Keiji Nakazawa. Book 5, The Never-Ending War starts in December 1947, two and a half years after the war has officially ended. Hiroshima is being repaired and is occupied by American troops. The Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission has set up labs to evaluate the effects of the blast on the people. Gen's father, sister and brother were killed during the blast, and his mother now suffers from radiation sickness. Gen's older brother Koji has to leave to work in a coal mine to earn money for the family, leaving Gen and his younger brother Akira to care for their sick mother and find food and medical care. Gen has befriended a group of street orphans who have been working for local racketeers and helps them escape a life of crime. This is a difficult book because it portrays the hardships that continue long after war is over. The Never-Ending War is the constant struggle that Gen, his friends and family must endure years after the war ended.

Barefoot Gen is a firsthand account of "the singular horror" of the 20th Century. My understanding of history as taught to me by the winners of WWII was shaken to its core by this graphic novel of the United States bombing of Hiroshima, and my country's complicity in the silence about what happened afterward. If we are ever to have a hope of moving forward from our dysfunctional state of denial we would do well to revisit our assessment of the closing of the war in the Pacific. The Barefoot Gen series is a good place to start. The series should be required reading in every secondary school in America.

This volume continues the story of a little band of survivors of the Hiroshima bombing, centered around Gen, and how they go about getting along in the brave new world. This carefully and pointedly shows that children are truly victims of war no matter the outcome.

Knapp drei Jahre sind mittlerweile seit dem schicksalhaften Atombombenabwurf über Hiroshima ins Land gegangen. Die Bevölkerung der Stadt leidet unter Versorgungsknappheit, Arbeitslosigkeit und zahlreichen, durch die Strahlung hervorgerufenen, Krankheitssymptomen. Als die Schule, die Gen Nakaoka mittlerweile seit einer Weile wieder besucht, von einigen Strolchen heimgesucht und der Lehrer mit einem Messer bedroht wird, erkennt Gen in einem der Jungen seinen alten Freund Ryuta wieder. Die Wiedersehensfreude ist groß und wir erfahren, dass der ehemalige Knirps mittlerweile für eine der zahlreichen Banden, die sich gegenseitig nicht den Dreck unter den Fingernägeln gönnen, arbeitet und sich tatsächlich einen Aufstieg innerhalb der Gang erhofft, wenn er und seine Freunde einen prominenten Kriminellen einer gegnerischen Familie umlegen. Der Plan geht leider nicht ganz auf und so verschwinden Ryuta und seine Freunde aus der Obhut der Bande, um sich eine eigene Existenz aufzubauen - doch das Verbrechen kennt kein Erbarmen und heftet sich an die Fersen seines potentiellen Kanonenfutters. Gens Mutter leidet sehr unter der harten, aber leider kein Geld für die Versorgung ihrer Kinder einbringenden, Arbeit und scheint auch von den Auswirkungen der Strahlung nicht verschont geblieben zu sein. Verzweifelt, aber nie den Mut verlierend, versuchen die restlichen Familienmitglieder mehr Geld für Medikamente heranzuschaffen. Da erfährt Gen von den "Bemühungen" der ABCC (Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission = quasi eine Organisation zur Untersuchung der Atombombenopfer), die den Opfern eine ausführliche Untersuchung und gerüchteweise auch andersweitige Hilfestellung geben kann. Doch die Wahrheit hinter dieser Gesellschaft ist eine andere.

Wir befinden uns am Jahreswechsel 1947/48. Das besiegte Japan wird von den US-Streitkräften kontrolliert, der Kaiser ist dabei, sich seinen Kultstatus als göttliche Führungsfigur wiederzuholen und die Neugier der Besatzer in Bezug auf die Auswirkungen ihrer ultimativen Waffe ist enorm. Autor Keiji Nakazawa entwirft ein nicht beschönigendes, vermeintlich halbwegs realistisches, Bild einer Bevölkerung, die von Krankheiten gequält wird, deren innerer Zusammenhalt nur noch ein Schatten ist und dennoch die Hoffnung auf Besserung nicht verlieren darf. Kriminelle Banden bestimmen die Abläufe des Marktes, die alten Eliten schwingen sich wieder nach oben - fast ist vergessen, dass man dem Kaiser und seinen willigen Gefolgsleuten das Unglück, das über die Stadt Hiroshima kam, zu einem guten Teil mit zu verdanken hat. Die USA schwanken zwischen der Pflege des Katastrophentourismus und der exakten Untersuchung der Auswirkungen der Bombe, um ihrerseits Vorsorgestrategien, für den Fall eines atomaren Angriffs auf Nordamerika, zu entwickeln. Es wirkt, als ob der erste Schrecken über die Zerstörungskraft der Waffe der wissenschaftlichen Neugier und strategischen Planung gewichen ist. Medial wird über Hiroshima (und Nagasaki) geschwiegen, denn jede nach Außen dringende Information könnte das Ansehen der USA in der Welt beschädigen und jedwede Veröffentlichung über das Leid der Japaner bzw. die realen Fakten wird mit harten Strafen sanktioniert. Nicht einmal literarische Werke zu dem Thema dürfen publiziert werden. Erschreckend glaubhaft und mit bitterem Beigeschmack zelebriert Keiji Nakazawa hier den Abgesang auf die vermeintlich wirkungsvollste Demokratie dieser Welt - ohne jedoch dabei das Schicksal des "kleinen Mannes" aus den Augen zu verlieren. Künstlerisch ist sein Werk wieder von typisch japanischem Pragmatismus geprägt, aber keinesfalls hässlich, sondern dem Anspruch der Erzählung nach wie vor angemessen.

Auf Grund der Tatsache, dass nach Band 4 leider keine deutsche Übersetzung mehr erschien, griff ich zu dem vorliegenden Hardcover, dass auch mit brauchbarem Schulenglisch ordentlich verständlich ist und kein Studium in Anglistik oder verhandlungssicheres Englisch voraussetzt. Wer also wissen möchte, wie es mit Gen, seiner Familie und seinen Freunden weitergeht, kann guten Gewissens zu dieser Ausgabe greifen. "Barfuss durch Hiroshima" oder "Barefoot Gen" bleibt eine beeindruckende, historisch wahrscheinlich nicht einmal sonderlich inakkurate, Erzählung über eine der größten, menschengemachten Katastrophen der Geschichte. Klare Leseempfehlung!
