Barefoot Gen Volume Seven ― "Bones into Dust" ― Gen has grown old enough to think about the legacy of the victims of the atomic bombing. Picking up from Volume Six, the story opens with Gen searching for a printer willing to publish an eyewitness account of the bombing written by "Papa," the journalist who serves as a father figure to Gen's war orphan friends. By hook and crook Gen and Ryuta manage to get the book printed and distributed, only to arouse the wrath of U.S. Army censors, who teach them a hard lesson about the politics of memory. Meanwhile, Gen's brother Koji returns home at last, only to find that their mother is on her deathbed.

About the Author

Nakazawa was born in Hiroshima, and was six years old when the city was destroyed by an atomic bomb in 1945. All of his family members who had not been evacuated died in the bombing, except for his mother, and an infant sister who died several weeks after the bombing. Compelled to tell his story in the memory of his family, Keiji Nakazawa is best known for his epic tragic history Barefoot Gen.

As a history lover, I am always trying to find out more about the different perspectives people in this world have. We didn't touch on the atomic bomb much in school ( I only know two were dropped- in Hiroshima and sadly, in Nagasaki), This series has helped to fill the gap. This series takes place from right before the bomb dropped to several years afterwards. Gen struggles with life in Japan as an A-Bomb victim. In this volume, not only does he have to deal with the American occupation and the suppression of any talk about the bomb or its tragic and horrifying after effects, he also has to deal with the loss of a close family member. I have to admit that this is a hard series to read. It hits and keeps right on hitting you in the heart, but I like it because the title protagonist, Gen, doesn't ever give up. He also fights for the right things and people who have been stepped on by both the Americans and the Japanese that are eager to pacify their new occupiers. It has moments of severe mood whiplash that can get tiresome, but this is a series everyone should at least read once.

Der vierte Sommer nach dem Abwurf der Atombombe über Hiroshima ist angebrochen. Gen und Ryuta suchen nach wie vor einen Weg, den Roman rund um den Abwurf und die Folgen der Bombe veröffentlichen zu lassen, doch keine Druckerei ist bereit, das Risiko der Herstellung des kaiser- und US-kritischen Werkes zu tragen. Schließlich kommt Ryuta auf die Idee, das Buch im Gefängnis drucken zu lassen, was an mangelnder Verfügbarkeit von Papier zu scheitern droht. Glücklicherweise hat Gens ehemaliger Nachbar, der Koreaner Pak, inzwischen ein recht einflussreiches Geschäft aufgebaut und kann aushelfen. Kurz nachdem das fertige Werk der Öffentlichkeit zugängig gemacht und an interessierte Leser verschenkt wurde, werden die Jungs jedoch vom US-Militär aufgegabelt und auf einen Stützpunkt gebracht, wo sie für die Veröffentlichung zur Räson gezogen werden sollen. Gens Mutter wird aus dem Krankenhaus entlassen, allerdings mit einer wenig hoffnungsvollen Diagnose. Um ihr einige schöne Tage zu bereiten, beweist Gen, dass Geld nach wie vor nicht stinkt (frei nach Kaiser Vespasian...) und er verdient mit dem Abschöpfen menschlicher Exkremente aus den örtlichen Plumpsklos plus dem Verkauf dieser als Düngerbasis eine ordentliche Summe. Mit dem Geld ermöglicht er es seiner Familie nach Kyoto zu reisen, wo das Schicksal erneut zuschlägt.

Während die erzählte Geschichte selbst nicht unbedingt revolutionär Neues auffährt, wird der kritische Ton der "Barefoot Gen"-Reihe noch einmal intensiver. Zum einen erleben wir Gens Wut gegenüber dem japanischen Kaiser, der sich nach seinen offensichtlichen Fehlentscheidungen den göttlichen Status aberkennt und von nun an als Mensch betrachtet werden will und zum anderen werden wir Zeuge der US-Bemühungen, die Auswirkungen der Bombe und den Umgang mit den Opfern weiterhin unter den redensartlichen Teppich zu kehren. Da einseitige Kritik für Autor und Zeichner Keiji Nakazawa aber ein Fremdbegriff ist, erneuert er natürlich auch den Blick der Japaner auf sich selbst und ihre Schuld an der für sie fatal endenden Gewaltspirale. Der oft angebrachten Argumentation, der Bombeneinsatz wäre lediglich eine konsequente Antwort auf den feigen japanischen Angriff auf Pearl Harbor gewesen, nimmt er ebenfalls recht schnell den Wind aus den Segeln und verweist oft auf das für US-Bürger erschreckende Bild eines Atombombenangriffes auf ihre Heimat und deren Zivilbevölkerung. Man könnte jetzt kritisieren, dass der mittlerweile siebente Band erzählerisch ein wenig auf der Stelle tritt und immer wieder ähnliche Szenarien, wie z.B. die erneute Angst um das Leben der Mutter, die Probleme bei der Veröffentlichung des Romans oder Gens verzweifelte Aktionen zum Geldverdienen, heraufbeschwört. Im Gegenzug dürfte das aber ungefähr einem Abbild der grundlegenden Vorgänge jener Zeit entsprechen und auch hält sich eine Autobiografie nicht immer an ein ausgefeiltes Drehbuch - das Leben ist, wie es ist. Nakazwawas gewohnt pragmatische Zeichnungen runden den Band erneut ab. Als Bonusinformationen erfahren wir einiges über die japanisch-ukrainische Völkerfreundschaft nach den Ereignissen in Tschernobyl, die in eine Kette mit jenem Tag im August 1945 und dessen Folgen gebracht werden.

Da es (noch?) keine deutsche Ausgabe des siebenten Bandes gibt, muss man auch hierzulande auf die englische Übersetzung zurückgreifen. Diese ist aber mit normal ausgeprägtem Schulenglisch bestens verständlich.
