Scared to death and with much dread, I strapped the collar on snugly and set it to intensity level 1 since she is small. I saw some reviews on here that were pretty bad so of course I was nervous about it being painful for her or causing the opposite of what it's meant to do. She finally barked and it did nothing, so I set the intensity level to 2. She barked again, and a warning alarm went off. This didn't phase her as it was the first time she heard it, so she kept on barking. It must have been a very minor shock cause I heard a slight distortion in her bark but she didn't do anything. She barked again and this time it must have gotten her pretty good because she yelped and cowered against the wall. My first instinct and immediate reaction was to run and take it off her and hug her, which I did, but I put it right back on her. I love her to death and I hated seeing that but I knew Something had to be done because our neighbors have been complaining. Guess what? No barking after that.
I put the collar on her as soon as I got home from work (I will only train her when I'm able to supervise the collar to make sure it isn't randomly shocking her). No barking so far, but later that night I opened our front door to what I thought was my sister arriving home, but realized it was the UPS man who had just exited his vehicle to drop a package off to the neighbor. She took off out the door barking, but the second the warning alarm beeped on the collar, she stopped dead in her tracks, made the quickest U-turn I've ever seen and came running right back inside the house. The collar didn't even have to deliver a shock. She was now trained solely with the warning beep. I call that success!
The mere sight of the collar will keep her from barking. I put it on her , not because she was barking but I figured I should put it on one more day just for good measure. As soon as I put it on, she started shaking like a leaf, and at that point I figured we'd had enough training so I took it off.
During the days I trained her with this collar, I was sure to give her more love and hugs than usual, and talked to her in soothing tones as I strapped the collar on her so that she knew it wasn't a punishment. I definitely think she understands what it's for now, and her incessant barking has been remedied. She is still her rough-and-tumble happy self so I am confident this hasn't been a negative experience for her. The shocks aren't meant to be pleasant, so you have to take that into consideration when buying something like this to help with barking. I hated the reaction she had to the first shock, but I'm glad I was consistent and kept putting the collar on her because she literally only needed that ONE shock to be trained. I also think maybe it's a little too powerful for a small dog, but because I had positive results with it, I'd recommend it. The only feature I don't care for is the fact that the shock intensifies with each bark. If she had barked again after that big shock, she probably would've flipped out as the one she got was obviously painful enough to make her yelp. All in all, I recommend this collar and I plan to buy a couple more for my Weimaraners who also have a bit of a problem with incessant barking. If you do decide to purchase this, just use with caution and definitely make sure you're there at all times to supervise while your baby is wearing it!
I like that the shock is not instataneous, my girls have the opportunity to tell other dogs their "opinion" so to speak. They were quick to learn that they get 3 beeps before the gradual shock intensity response begins. Thank you so much for designing something that allows my neighbors to continue not to feel my dogs are a nuisance.
