Barley Malt powder is super healthy, since the sugars are largely Maltose, which do not produce a sharp sugar spike for diabetics. I have tried just about every one available, and Barry Farms makes the best one of all. The Barry Farms barley malt powder is sweeter tasting than most others and quick dissolving in milk. I use it with straight cocoa powder and milk in a blender to make a tasty chocolate malted breakfast drink. Two tablespoons of this only has 3 grams of sugar. This is one great tasting health food.

I have always loved the flavor of malt in shakes. However, I found most shakes were too sweet. I wanted to add just the malt flavor without the sugar or sweetening agent. This is it! I finally found the malt flavor I have been looking for without all the added ingredients. This pure malt powder is more likely to form lumps than a malted milk powder so a mixer or blender should be used. If you're looking for just malt flavor , this is the one for you.

I have been reading thru the post and it appears there is lots of confusion between the difference between Diastatic and Non Diastatic. Diastatic barley malt contains an enzyme that convert starch in flour to sugar, to feed the yeast during fermentation of the dough. It is added to promote the catalytic action. Nondiastatic barley flour does not contain this enzyme, so it can be added in large quantities as a flavor enhancer. My favorite past time is baking bread and a little of the diastatic goes a long ways (.5-1% flour weight) and is used during long & slow (overnight) fermentation. Non diastatic is normally used in bagels and scones for flavor. Its sole purpose is for its flavor. That is why I am looking for it. My sons really love the Stickyfingers Scones but they are way expensive and I think it's the malted barley flour (non diastatic) is what makes them so delicious and gives them the chewy texture.

As a part-time ameature baker, I see dramatic results when incoporating this powder. My breads have a much better golden color, and colleagues at work often compliment my breads on their appearance.

I haven't tried this but wanted to pass on the information straight from the manufacturer:

"The barley malt powder is non-diastatic.

Hope this helps.

This product came up when I searched for "diastatic barley malt," but now that I have it at home, based on the nutritional information and Barry Farm's website, this is non-diastatic malt. This is great for a sweetener that imparts a nice malty taste, but if you want a dough enhancer to improve bread texture and browning, this isn't what you're looking for. Hopefully Amazon will update the description to reflect this. Otherwise, great stuff.

Since I have always loved the taste of malt, I grew up drinking malteds, made from real malt powder. My faves were chocolate and banana. When I became an adult, it occurred to me that you could hardly find a real malted any longer--only "shakes". Also, as an adult, I begin to bake my own bread and discovered, through reading a lot of information about bread-baking, that "barley malt" was an ingredient that artisan bakers used in their loaves. At first I purchased the liquid form of barley malt and didn't even connect the fact that this was real "malt", only in liquid form. I added it to some of my bread recipes and the result was a positive one, in yielding richer tasting breads. But the problem with the liquid is that you refrigerate it, and subsequently, it is a sticky, syrupy substance--difficult to measure out. Hence, my interest in the powder form of malt. This product is the real thing. It has NO ADDED SUGAR, like most other products do. Other recognizable-named products work well, if you just want a "drink powder", but if you want the most nutritious substance, able to enhance your yeast baking, AND to make divine malteds and ice cream sundaes, GET THIS PRODUCT. I will continue to buy this pure Barley Malt Powder. Love it!
