I'm glad I chose as one of my bucket list items to read all of dickens major works. The penguin classic while paperback is a nice edition to have the scholarly notes help those new to dickens
In Barnaby Rudge he also drives the plot by the similar sort of unlikely coincidence that peppers his earlier works. So the book in some ways falls between two stools. Nevertheless, it is distinctive in that it is one of only two historical novels that Dickens wrote, the other being the very late Tale of Two Cities. The historical background, which isn't dealt with until the second half of the book, is the period of the Gordon Riots, a violent mob protest against Catholicism that occurred in 1780. These riots and the politics of the mob that surround them are brilliantly imagined by Dickens, and the book is worth reading for that alone.
