On A Mission To End Food Waste On Banana Farms
Upwards of 20% of the bananas that they grown are wasted because the bananas aren’t “perfect” for export. The crazy part is that they still look perfect. But if they are a day too ripe or the wrong size, they won’t make it on the boat for export. That’s what inspired us to create tasty banana snacks instead of letting them go to waste.

How did you come up with the idea for this product?
When Caue was a kid, his dad dehydrated bananas in their back yard in Southern Brazil. At the end of 2012 - Caue, Nik and Matt came together with the goal of creating the brand synonymous with banana-based products, Barnana. When we started the journey of becoming the first and only banana brand, we discovered one of the dirty secrets of the industry. That is, roughly 20% of all the bananas that are grown go to waste before ever leaving the farm. That is what propelled us into upcycling these bananas by making tasty snacks.
What makes your product special?
There are no other banana brands and there are no other products like ours. From our chewy banana bites that are soft and banana-bread like to our crunchy banana brittle - the innovation just keeps getting crazier.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
For us, being able to run a sustainable food business that takes care of people and their families is probably the best part. That coupled with our fans who truley love the brand makes this whole journey very special.
