In truth, I have to say I plodded through some padding in the middle of the book, including a false plot with the insane fox out to kill Snowy, the talking cat.
Gibbs has the brand of wit I like, when Snowy tells Mrs. Jumbo, the elephant, "I thought they kept you guys locked up better than...one of those places where they keep things locked up really well." Mixing his metaphors, Snowy says, "He's like some evil octopus, perched in the middle of his web, stretching out his nefarious testicles across the criminal world." And, echoing Jack Nicholson, Bill's father tells his son, "You want the [tiger's] tooth? You can't handle the tooth."
The most emotional parts of the book certainly have to do -- not with Bill's imminent death -- but young Bill's cousin Luke who bullies Bill, steals his girlfriend, and ingratiates himself with the family. Every 14-year-old boy will cringe as he recognizes the classmate who is richer, taller, cosmopolitan and more handsome. Now, there's an arch enemy!
