'Baron Von Tollbooth' is one of the finest works emanating from the Jefferson family. it has been a constant companion since 1973. The new re-master makes some improvements over past re-mastered versions. The rhythm guitar parts and secondary lead parts seem more authentic and a little more raw. The booklet includes visuals from the original album inner sleeve...what a gorgeous design!!. The only downside is the lack of outtakes and alternative mixes: the alternate mixes do exist!! Some extras would have been a welcome addition.

This album is typically grace slick and paul kanter with shades of "hijack the starship". Howevever, White Boy tells the timeless story that involves the haunting mythologies associated with the Avatars that allegedly taught mankind, cross culturally and over the eons, the "ways" of civilized livieng that were often corrupted by greed and self-serving ideologies. White Boy speaks to all of us in a haunting and mysterious way and reminds us that we are visitors on this little blue planet and our fate and future is still being determined! Grace Slick's semi-vocal echoes are memorable and gives the song an extra special quality that is timeless and priceless. However, this is probably not for everyone! If you connect, you will be richly rewarded by this disc.

overall, this is a fine effort by former airplaners/future starshippers paul kantner, grace slick and david freiberg(the latter played on the last two jefferson airplane records and was also previously with quicksilver messenger service, another bay area psych band). the definitive highlight on the album for me is the pink floydish number called 'your mind has left your body' kantner and frieberg's harmonies sound like david gilmour and richard wrights harmonies on many of pink floyd's classic seventies records.i will give it four stars instead of five because a. i like blows against the empire better, although this album is very good it does have a couple of numbers i typically skip over. b. i cannot say grace's numbers on the album measure up to her classic j.a. numbers. there are some great numbers here: flowers in the night-an awesome space rock number by kantner that wouldn't have been too out of place on 'blows', walkin, harp tree lament, a number sung and written by frieburg with grateful dead lyricist robert hunter. 'harp' is reminiscent to me of the beach boys late sixties-early seventies numbers like 'friends' or 'day in the life of a tree'. white boy is another cool paul kantner number and the album ends with 'sketches of china' which sounds not too unlike something the stones or guns and roses might record. 'sketches' has some great three part vocals by slick, kantner and freiburg. craig chaquico and jerry garcia also provide excellent guitar work on this album. i definitely recommend it.

This is the last of the Paul Kantner "trilogy" starting with Blows Against the Empire and Sunfighter. It is also an important stepping stone towards the beginning of Jefferson Starship.

I have always loved this album and was glad when it was remastered and rereleased after all this time. It is truly a classic.

I love this album. Enough said about that.
I ordered the 2009 version, listed as Sbme Special Mkts label, two times from Amazon and once from Borders. Each time I received the 1997 RCA version, with no indication inside or out that it is somehow the '09 reissue but without updated graphics or booklet to indicate Sbme. I inquired with both Amazon and Borders but no one could explain what the problem is; and I finally settled for what is apparently the '97 version.
Does anyone know the deal?, and has anyone ever actually received the supposed '09 Sbme label version? thanks for any insight.

Sorpresa

Impresionante Slick en Across The Board. Efectivo Kantner en White Boy y fantástico Flowers Of The Night de Jack Traylor colega poco conocido de la época en california.
En resumen a la altura de los mejores Airplane de siempre.
Totalmente recomendable.
