Editorial Reviews

Baroque is the second album from violist Nadia Sirota and the first-ever co-release from like-minded labels New Amsterdam Records (based in Brooklyn) and Bedroom Community (based in Iceland). This is the follow up to 2009's much-lauded first things first, called 'a collection of vital, imaginative recent scores' by the New York Times

Just as a note to folks, this is not Baroque music in the musical period sense. It is in that much of if is quite ornate or busy depending on your mood. If asked to place this into a category(ies) I'd be hard pressed. It definitely has some roots in minimalism and "ambient" genres. Mrs. Sirota's viola playing is admirable. She plays eloquently and convincingly which is an odd combination with many of the virtuosic feats on the album. The album is refreshingly original . As a disclaimer, I'm not familiar with with Mrs. Sirota, any of the composers on the album and wouldn't consider myself an expert of any sort when it comes to new music. That said, I wasn't completely sold on the album as a whole. I often felt there was some indulging in what I hereby coin "Multi-trackers Delight." I'm not sure what exactly was written out by the composers, but on the whole it took on a very improvisatory feel, sometimes working well, other times not. In general, I found most pieces lacking in some underlying structure that I could grab onto to maintain my attention. I also at times felt the recording could have better, or at least different. I was often wanting to hear many of the auxiliary techniques and interesting accompanying instruments more richly; or in other words I found the recording/mastering dry.

Music by the leading composers and performers of contemporary "classical" music. Ms. Sirota is an exemplary performer who plays with passion and truly communicates her own feelings, as well as giving the compositions their signature interpretations. Haunting.

There is nothing more exciting to me than a very structured classical sound that employs electronic and live instrumentation. Nadia Sirota is clearly a master at the viola and performs without restraint. She displays a strong understanding of synths and electronic instruments, as well, and applies them in a very aggressive way. The electronic elements were utilized in a serious manner; thankfully not in novelty. Excellent, brooding melodies throughout with exciting high points. At times, I am reminded of a Debussy/Ravel CD that I own and love. A very entertaining and introspective album. Highly recommended.
