Here’s the message I took away from Barren Metal: 'Banking is magic that works' (p. 128). I think that’s a fascinating insight, phrased in a sublime way. It really speaks to where we are today in the world, with central banks — including the Federal Reserve — exercising so much power over most of the globe. ... A competing phrase for summing up Barren Metal could be 'Capitalism is state-sponsored usury.' ... From the fall of Rome, th[e] Catholic ban on usury was enforced because the Church treated economics 'as if God mattered.' According to this doctrine, God gave men faith and reason to pursue success in this life, but as the Middle Ages gave way to succeeding eras, God began to matter less and less, and Jews moved in to fill the void. Jones’ lengthy description of this epic transformation is fascinating, allowing Jones to once again show the incredible breadth of his knowledge. The flip side of this unhealthy usurious equation is one that abides by the moral law and puts labor above other economic systems, for 'there is only one use that will turn credit into wealth, and that is the application of labor.' Jones’ views are militantly aracial, by which I mean he is insistent that race is not a factor in the struggle between Jewry and the rest of humanity. Best socio-economics book I've ever read.

If I could have every person in this world read a handful of books, this would be one of them. This book is very scholarly, maticulously researched, with the resulting conclusions being mind blowing, eye opening, and life altering to the lesser informed.....while to even those who are educated on and already critical of our socio-economic system, it still delves so deep into the history of capitalism, that it will still pound you with historical facts and their consequences that will teach you something, especially because this book shines a light of truth on the hisory of capitalism that most people, especially college attendees never get, which is the historical relationship and tension between the Catholic church and the forces of the merchants, bankers, aristocrats, and others members of high finnance. Most critiques I was ever exposed to, especially in college, always have the Marxist, secular, post enlightenment spin to it, which always is rooted in the materialist philosophical world outlook, and therefore limited by all their philosophical pre-suppostions. While I have no problem with enertaing their critues, it is so refreshing to read a capitalism critique from a standpoint of an author who is open about and not afraid to apply his metaphysical/ trancedental moral belief system ( Catholicism ) to the socio-economic problems of our day, BUT, rather than pound the reader with bible verses to prove his point, Dr Jones' scholarly nature forces him to hammer you with historical facts, and all the references to back them up. This work is a true Magnum Opus for Dr Jones, and even if your not a Catholic (which I'm not), if your an atheist, far left or far right politically, or even perfectly balanced in the middle, everyone should read this, because at the very least it will rattle your world view, and at the best it will change you deep down as a person. A++ for Dr E Michael Jones....job well done.
