This is a great book for a fast, independent learners. If you tend to understand things by reading things on your own, without the help or guidance of another person, then you will like this book. The book is supplemented with exercises during chapter topics, and practice problems (with explanations) at the end of each chapter. In addition to having this book, you should also be in front of a computer, programming along as you go. The only way to learn Computer Science is through theory and coding. However, I still think this book needs some work. Some topics can get tricky (Inheritance, Abstract Classes, Arrays, etc.). In order to fully understand these fundamental topics, you may need to read up on it somewhere else. Overall, this is a great book for independent learners.

This book is great for reviewing the general concepts on the exam. That is, it describes the idea behind object-oriented programming, top-down development, inheritance, etc. in conceptual terms that helps the reader to understand the material.

The problem is that much of the conceptual material isn't actually tested on the exam. And the material that is tested on the exam, which includes analyzing recursive code, for-loops and nested for-loops to print output, and other code evaluation questions, aren't covered enough in this book. Likewise, the practice tests in this book are too conceptual, and are much too easy compared to the real exam. I learned this the hard way.

This is a great book to learn the general concepts, but to do well on the exam, make sure you take a look at lots of practice exams, preferably more recent ones, especially if you self-studied for the exam like me and didn't have a teacher. The questions on the AP exam are very unnatural, so even if you have a good grasp on Java, you really have to get used to the way the questions are designed in order to do well.

I got this book for my AP Computer Science A course and I found it to be really accurate. Unfortunately, however, the practice tests focus more on testing vocabulary than actually testing the actual code and the like. It's good for review, just don't expect it to be the final say for the AP test.

It's really good. Really.
But it does lack a few things.
At the beginning, it would be really nice to have a page behind the table of contents with the percentage ogoff the AP test that is covered by that section.
Also, a few complicated sections (EX floating numbers) couldve used better explanations
Finally, it couldve used a glossary, for dealing with the java and programming lingo. For newbies.

Maybe it's just because this is review, but this book will suddenly introduce new words and topics into questions without ever explaining what it means

Don't really love Barron's books. Normally superfluous, never concise and to the point. I love how Princeton books have a "how to crack it" section, or a little summary of the concept for easy review. This book is hard at the beginning and never reviews topics easily.

This book covers a lot of vocabulary, which is helpful in trying to get a basic understanding on the concept. But all the given practice tests were way too easy; I scored really well on them and it gave me a false confidence boost. The actual exam is way more difficult and time consuming. I would advise one to find a better book to prep for APs.

This was a lovely study tool and great for preparing you for the test. As a stand-alone teaching material it is meh, it would definitely be more helpful to have a teacher or a computer and online friends but that's a given. The book has tons of test-prep material which is lovely and ultimately it's purpose. The lack of visuals that other Java books have and concise explanation even relative to the standards discussed, is where this book loses a star. However if this is to help you get comfortable with testing materials and maybe brush up on things here and there, it is a perfect fit for you!
