The problem is that much of the conceptual material isn't actually tested on the exam. And the material that is tested on the exam, which includes analyzing recursive code, for-loops and nested for-loops to print output, and other code evaluation questions, aren't covered enough in this book. Likewise, the practice tests in this book are too conceptual, and are much too easy compared to the real exam. I learned this the hard way.
This is a great book to learn the general concepts, but to do well on the exam, make sure you take a look at lots of practice exams, preferably more recent ones, especially if you self-studied for the exam like me and didn't have a teacher. The questions on the AP exam are very unnatural, so even if you have a good grasp on Java, you really have to get used to the way the questions are designed in order to do well.
But it does lack a few things.
At the beginning, it would be really nice to have a page behind the table of contents with the percentage ogoff the AP test that is covered by that section.
Also, a few complicated sections (EX floating numbers) couldve used better explanations
Finally, it couldve used a glossary, for dealing with the java and programming lingo. For newbies.
