This is the first bar book. First published in 1862.
The recipes prove it.
I am using a technique toward the back of the book to make an Effervescent Cocktail, which involves tartaric acid and sodium bicarbonate stired into the drink at the end.
Who says molecular mixology is a new fad?

Great edition. This edition is a faximile of an original (so it does hove some imperfections from being scanned) but each original page is set within a box with decorative frame on each page (look at the Amazon preview 'look inside' feature to get an idea of what I'm talking about. Really nice cover and substantial paper. I thought it was really well done; far superior than the other paperback editions.

For the other review stating 'poorly transcribed', they really don't know what they are talking about. This edition is not transcribed, but rather a high quality scan and print of an original edition.

Obviously the contents of this classic bar tending guide are good but the physical quality was very very bad. It will fall apart. I got this as a gift for my boyfriend and within minutes of turning the pages it started falling apart...but if you're just wanting the contents for semi-cheap...I guess this is the way to go...?

Having bartended for over thirty years, I have seen hundreds of bartending guides. This book has some real,grassroots reciepes that have disappeared over the last hundred plus years. This mix guide allows you to mix and enjoy the beverage as it was originally concieved. A great resource whether you are a bartender or just mix drinks to entertain friends.

If I could, I'd give this version of the book negative stars! In my opinion, this version of Jerry Thomas' book verges on fraudulent. I don't know how in good conscience this publisher (Classic House Books) can put that title on what they have published! First, the drawings in the original are as important to the book as the printed material - and they have left out all the drawings. I believe that omission, by itself, essentially creates a misrepresentation of the original. There were at least two typos in the very short preface, alone - a rather poor reflection on the publisher. I will, from now on, avoid any book published by Classic House Books. I am returning this version of the book for a refund and I have ordered what I hope is a more historically accurate reprint. If you really want to have a reprint of Jerry Thomas' book, get a different version of it; even if you pay a little more for it, at least you will know you have something a little more authentic.

I bought this as a gift to give to someone, but I have to say when I received it, I spent a few minutes thumbing through it, and intend to buy my own copy. It appeared to me that, rather than typeset, each page was directly reproduced from the original, almost like a photocopy, but looking more like a woodcut pressing. Overall it seemed like a very faithful reproduction of a very old book of cocktail recipes.

I was excited to get this book and see some of the old mixed drinks and cocktails. I was expecting the book to be smaller so it was a little larger than I had hoped. Some of the pages are a bit hard to read because of the way the pages were copied but these are mostly reference pages. For the price it wasn't a bad deal but I had hoped for a little better.
