John Turturro (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) shines in the lead role as Barton Fink, the Coen Brothers' (Fargo, No Country for Old Men) hilarious satire set in 1940s Hollywood. Barton Fink is a Broadway playwright who reluctantly relocates to Hollywood to write screenplays. Ordered to write a low budget screenplay about wrestling, Fink manages to type one sentence and then... nothing! Although his chatty insurance salesman neighbor Charlie (John Goodman, 10 Cloverfield Lane) helps out by teaching Barton about wrestling, the clock ticks, the temperature rises, and Barton's life spins more and more out of control. The top-notch cast includes Judy Davis (Naked Lunch), Michael Lerner (Busting), John Mahoney (TV s Frasier), Tony Shalhoub (TV s Monk), Jon Polito (Miller s Crossing) and Steve Buscemi (Reservoir Dogs), with a hauntingly beautiful score by Carter Burwell (Blood Simple) and gorgeous cinematography by Roger Deakins (The Big Lebowski). Barton Fink received three 1991 Oscar nominations - (Best Supporting Actor - Lerner, Art Direction/Set Direction and Costume Design), and also won Best Actor (Turturro) and Best Director (Joel Coen), as well as the coveted Palme d'Or at Cannes.

Picture quality varies throughout. Heavy grain texture at times (especially the dark interior shots, of which there are many) but it kind of fits the style of the film (1940s Hollywood).
Overall, a big improvement over the dvd picture quality, but deserves better treatment as a blu-ray release.
One of the Coen bros. very best films.
This particular Blu-ray transfer however is very disappointing. Right in the opening couple minutes, you are bombarded with a contrasty, grainy mess. Seriously, my laser disc and DVD versions of this movie do it more justice than what is presented here. Hopefully the Coens will step in and set things to right in a future transfer.
Barton Fink is rich in cinematic language communicating much more than just the words you hear the actors and actresses say.
Set during a time when fascists powers were on the rise in parts of the world, the main protagonist is Barton Fink.
Fink starts out as a playwright who enjoys some critical acclaim for his play in New York and as a result, Hollywood comes calling. At first, he's reluctant to "sell out" his belief in representing the common man because he believes he'll be pressured into writing purely for profit, he eventually makes the move...and that's where the action really begins! There are more than a few completely unexpected plot twists and plenty of action at just the right times. What does the picture of the girl sitting on the beach mean to you?
I enjoyed this offbeat, quirky and yet fun film as I got to hang out with a fellow writer, Barton Fink.
I think you'll enjoy it too.
