Great basic text with lots of good images

I purchased this text for a course in histology that had no assigned text, and have been very pleased with the book. There is also a DVD of images which is a little hard to work with, but helpful once you get the hang of it. there are a number of different texts in the class, and this is the one we all rely on for identifying images in our lab sessions.

Good textbook, but be aware of the limitations

I found this book to be a good introduction to histology. It is limited in two ways: The first is that it is truly 'Basic Histology'. This is a plus and a minus. On the plus side, the book resists the temptation to drown the student in a sea of detailed molecular and cellular biology. I think this was intentional, and they do a good job of cutting to the chase. On the minus side, too many of the images are of poor quality. As an instructor of this subject, I found it quite frustrating that some of the schematics (which are supposed to help me get my point across) were of such low resolution that they appeared out of focus on a powerpoint presentation. This is not acceptable in this era of digital imaging. I would use this book again, but only if the image problem is corrected.

　洋書の組織学書として人気があります。第９版までは図や写真も白黒だったのですが、第10版からはカラーになり、版型も大きくなり、紙や印刷の質も良くなり、読みやすさの点でかなり改善されました。この本の旧版の最大のネックは図・写真が白黒だったことなので、今回の改訂によるカラー化は注目すべきところです。
　テキストの内容は必要かつ十分で、無駄なことは一切書かれていません。クリアカットな説明は読んでいて気持ちが良く、referenceとしては最高だと思います。
　しかし、初学者が独学で学ぶには無駄のなさが逆に取っつきにくさになるかもしれません。章の始めから専門用語が次々出てきますので調べるのが大変でしょう。
　アトラスとしても、必要最低限のものは載せていますが、実習をこれ一冊で乗り切るのは大変かも知れません。私はKerrという人の書いたAtlas of Functional Histologyというアトラスを使っていますが、その写真の数や精緻さに比べると、残念ながらやや見劣りすると思います。
　全体的に見ると、良書でお薦めしますが、先ほども書いたように独学用としてはやや敷居が高いかも知れません。講義と平行して使ったり、一度学習した内容の復習として使ったり、あるいは日本の組織学書を使っているがもう一つ不満、という方には５つ星の本だと思います。上の評価は初学者に対するものとお考え下さい。
