This is a concise version of the full "Cellular and Molecular Immunology" by the same author. I read this book cover to cover as a MS-1. Now a MS-2 preparing for step1, I feel that, while the pictures are good and you can go through it very quickly (just over 200 pages),the book leaves out a lot of important information that are essential in understanding the mechanisms of immune responses and their application to specific diseases. After I finish a chapter, I often feel I just get fed hard, general facts without understanding the "WHY".

In comparison, the full book this book is based on, the "Cellular and Molecular Immunology," though much bigger (~600 pages), it offers much clearer explanation of how and why an immune response work a certain way. In the end I got a lot more out of the bigger book than this one. If I had a second chance, I'd spend more time and about 10 bucks more and just get the bigger book the first time around.

This book is excellent for getting the "big picture" when it comes to learning immunology. It has great illustrations with concise explanations to boot. I would recommend this to anyone learning immunology for the first time and as a supplemental text for anyone in the medical sciences.

I'm a first year medical student and this was the required text for class. I also bought Levinson's Review of Micro, which many students use for the Immunology section (and question bank). I thought the Abbas was much easier to read, and presented things in a very logical fashion. The chapters on T cell and B cell response are split up according to recognition and effector response, which I thought was a little unnecessary. They also repeat material each chapter, so you could technically read it out of order and still get the concepts. I like this, because it exposed me to certain key ideas over and over again, making them easier to remember. I prefer this text over Levinson, which I tried to read a few days before our exam, but only lead to confusion. This text has a lot of pictures, which makes chapters a lot shorter in terms of wording, and I also like this.

This book is only 12 chapters with the first one being an absolutely confusing overview of the entire book. What I've come to find about the book is that you can skip all the words and read the pictures if you really wanted. There are pictures on almost every page and it is almost as if the text supplements the pictures. Overall pretty easy to understand and gives a good basic overview of immunology.

An excellent review text. The author methodically links concept after concept as he builds to a practical overview of basic Immunology. There are numerous well done illustrations, and they blend in with the nearby written text. The illustrations are so good, that, in themselves, they can provide for a quick topic review. On the other hand, the opening chapter is a difficult to read summary of what is to follow, but the first chapter serves a purpose. There is excellent clinical correlation, artfully provided in brief discussion and illustration.

I used this as a med student taking during our immuno block and felt it was really helpful. I agree with some of the other reviews that say this book leaves out some details, but I think that's actually why this book is better in some regards. Depending on how your course is run you might need something more indepth if your school really emphasizes immuno or or if you're a phd or if you're planning to do research in immuno this probably isn't for you. For me, our block was relatively short and while I started out reading Janeway's, I just didn't have the time. This book had nice illustrations which helped to explain many mechanisms and organize topics, and most of all was a concise read that got to the point. I didn't really use this to review much for step 1 but after studying for it and taking it, I think this is more than sufficient to prep for the immuno questions that would be asked on step 1.

This book is the only resource you will need to understand immunology as a medical student. Go through their charts and diagrams and the information has no choice but to stick. It is short, an easy read, and really hones in on the important parts of immunology to help you rock the boards!

I went to med school four decades ago. Immunology filled up only a few pages of my notebook, therefore I could not understand any recent medical literature that mentioned anything "immunological". So I then went about purchasing most of the various current titles in the subject, finding most were way too detailed for my needs. I cannot imagine how any modern med student can digest the material contained in most of these books in a one semester course.

The best book I have found is this one I am rating 5 stars. It is concise yet comprehensive; explanations are clear, and most importantly this book has the best pictures which explain the concepts by themselves. This book is digestible in full, as compared to most of the other texts, and it has given me an adequate base on which to build.
