Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
If you have a basic course in NMR spectroscopy such as that in elementary organic chemistry and want to know more and would not like to deal with all the mathematics, this is probably the book that you would like to go to. This book discusses all the physical principles of common techniques in NMR spectroscopy without using extensive mathematical treatments such as product operator formalism and density matrix. Spin gymnastics in many NMR experiments such as spin echo, INEPT and NOSEY are explained pictorially. In almost all the cases, the author should be congratulated for being very successful in using such an approach. However, in one or two cases, I myself found it somewhat confusing because it is too wordy.

The book also covers such topics as solid state NMR and MRI descriptively. These topics are generally not found in many introductory books. The last chapter of the book deals with applications of NMR to biological and medical sciences and is well presented. There are quite a few examples of spectrum interpretation throughout the text. However, this is not a book one can use to learn organic spectrum interpretation. For that, one should consult books such as Jeffrey Simpson's "Organic Structure Determination, using 2-D NMR spectroscopy". Overall, the book provides a descriptive introduction of the physics in NMR spectroscopy. If one wants to go further than this, books such as those by James Keeler, "Understanding NMR spectroscopy" and Neil Jacobsen's "NMR Spectroscopy Explained" should be consulted. Keeler's and Jacobsens' books, however, are much more mathematical.

I don''t have this edition, but like very much an earlier edition. It would be helpful if Amazon was better at describing book/edition details. It appears that this is the 5th and most recent (as of July 2014) edition.

Really fast shipping for 6.99 dollars. Packed with plastic wrap and it looks wonderful. Textbook for NMR class, and what surprises me is that this new edition is a lot cheaper than previous one.
