Like a pocket grammar reference

Small, concise and practical. I need a book I could train with real sentences and that the vocab wouldn't drive me crazy trying to parse and understand the meaning. It provides easy examples.
I took a full 18months language course and I can say for sure that over 80% of the vocab and grammar points were in my lessons. But in this book they are explained and given examples to and make the idea clearer. It's small enough I can take it with me to trips or even read on the bus or metro. I can quickly consult structures and practice grammar and fluidity to my Hanyu, adding vocab is a plus!
I like paper books because I can write on them, notes and vocab definition whereas digital is not as practical so I decided to try it.
It covers grammar and usage from basic to intermediate , all Chinese I studied plus a lot more! Definitely handy.

Doesn't Get Much Better

I am writing my review from a dorm room in China. I do not typically write reviews, but I had to comment on this book. After sitting with a very knowledgeable Chinese professor trying to hash out some grammar difficulties, I went on a search for more help. I am so relieved to find a complete yet "brief" grammar guide. The authors have done a fantastic job of taking the fluff out, without leaving the reader with a book of rules that don't seem applicable to your everyday life. They have integrated the rules succinctly and in an understandable fashion. Even though I am on a limited budget here and balked at the $10 price, after reading the book, would have felt I got my value at $20. If you want to study Chinese this is one of those purchases you will be glad to have made time and again and will reference repeadtedly.

There's some rumor that persists in Chinese learning that "Chinese grammar is easy." While there are no verb tenses or genders, the word order and hence the way the parts of speech are put together is unusual, so this book is well worthwhile. It is not a stand-alone text for learning Mandarin, but a very valuable adjunct.

I highly recommend this book. I keep coming back to it as I learn Mandarin. I even bought a second copy so that my Chinese friend, who is learning English, can share the lessons as we tutor each other. They are laid out with the English sentence, followed by how a Mandarin speaker would structure the same sentence, followed by the same sentence in Pinyin, followed by the Chinese characters. So, my friend, who does not read Pinyin, could follow the characters while I read the Pinyin out loud. And I could show her the English translation for her to read out loud. We were able to study the same sentences and learn the difference in grammatical structure together. Brilliantly done.

OK, my fellow students, please make note and get out your credit card. THIS BOOK IS AWESOME! Larry Herzberg and his wife Qin Xue Herzberg have done the impossible! They have actually created a guide to Chinese grammar that is FUN. Not only is it fun, it's also simple, humorous, and most importantly EFFECTIVE. I bought this book after promising myself I would never, ever, ever, ever buy another book on Chinese grammar or Chinese language, period. I had already bought the Schaum's, Ross, and every other noted (and rightfully so) Chinese grammar breakdowns books and all the books angled to supposedly "demystify" Mandarin. Perhaps it was the number of pages in the Herzberg book, or the price, I don't know. But, something made me just exhale and buy the book. What the heck, one more won't hurt. It's small. I can jam in onto one of the grammar book shelves. When the book arrived I was immediately curious as it is so simply laid out. Despite the fact that I rarely, if ever, read introductions (or program the clocks on my digital recording devices) I was inspired immediately by Herzberg's. The first sentence that caught my eye was "Never translate literally word for word" which after much grief and suffering speaking BC (Butchered Chinese) in China, I knew to be very true. Then, as I continued to read, I read all the things I wish had learned EARLY in all the other million Mandarin books I had bought, studied and then attempted suicide as a result of. Now, it has actually happened. Someone has written a COMPREHENSIVE Chinese grammar book that is a total pleasure to engage in! And, there are no ponderous explanations page after page. No dreaded pattern drills or, God forbid, a workbook. The Herzbergs have simply broken grammar lessons down to ONE brilliant example of BAD grammar and one brilliant example of how you are supposed to say it! I found immediately, and continue to find with this book, that if taken in simple, easy doses, this grammar stuff can be pretty fun and interesting. THE BEST result is the virtually instant improvement in spoken Chinese, and the fact that this simple book has somehow taken the mystery and struggle out of "yibian....yibian', "ruguo..jiu" and the usual suspects. Their approach is minimalism at it's finest and it works deliciously. I am praying for more of the same and HIGHLY recommend this book to any serious student of Mandarin at beginner or intermediate level (Since I am not at an advanced level I cannot state the benefits of the book but I suspect it is even more helpful at advanced levels when the inner thinking patterns to translate are more complex). Goodbye Ross (your book is good, just not this good), goodbye Schaum (great stuff for reference while in country) goodbye tedium. There is a reason this book has only five-star ratings and I have my grammar book! Thanks Herzbergs.
