Bernard Bass is considered to be one of the foremost "giants" in the field of leadership. Not only was he seminal in the development of the theory of transformational leadership, but he is also founding editor of the Leadership Quarterly and is widely cited in a multitude of journals, books, presentations, and courses. Any student, professor, or practitioner interested in the field of leadership should acquire this text as it continues to be one of the most comprehensive books on leadership today. His introduction extends far beyond the average textbook by exploring the historical roots and universality of the leadership concept - everything from Plato to Primates. He then provides what is, perhaps, one of the most detailed examinations of the leadership definition that I have ever seen. While most authors simple lament that there are as many definitions of leadership as there are researchers, Bernard Bass actually considers and explains several of these concepts for the reader. These includes everything from leadership as a differentiated role, an exercise of influence, a personality, and even a symbol.

For the remainder of the book, Bass provides nearly 1,000 pages rich in content coverage and citation counts. For anyone desiring to augment their research paper with critical or important citations, Bass provides a rich array of research accumulated into one convenient text. Oftentimes I find that my general readings are greatly enhanced by additional research or insights provided by Bass. For instance, one of our readings on Fiedler's contingency theory provided a generally positive review of the theory's validity. However, upon consulting Bass, I found a more skeptical review regarding the theory published one year following our reading for class.

This is a brand new, updated version of Stogill's and Bass's handbook which was last updated in 1990. I purchased it because Ron Riggio and Ruth Bass talked about it at ILA Conferenc in November 2008, just prior to the release of the book. This was the last publication that Bernard Bass was in progress writing/editing before he passed away in late 2007. Also, although Ruth Bass worked along side Bernard Bass with much of his research, I believe this is the first publication which includes her as author/editor. It is truly a treasure -- chocked full of research which masters and doctoral students can use for dissertations, including gender, diversity, conflict, power, the "new" charisma and leadership, you name it! There is a new section on Global Leadership which I've found to be very useful for a Global Leadership class since it incorporates research which has taken place since the GLOBE study.

This is a complete reference tool that offers a wealth of background and information for anyone interested in leadership. The hard cover 4th edition is amazing in its thorough scientific review on anything and everything related to Leadership. Much valuable information. The 4th Edition Hard Cover is "Heavy" so it may be better to get the virtual version.

I bought this book for a graduate student in Leadership who was doing his research paper on leadership in the U.S. He had some of the more current information, but he said this book was exactly what he was missing in learning about the foundations of leadership.

Although to large to carry around (it weighs almost 4 lbs!) on an airplane, it is chock full of ideas and theories that will help you understand people and leadership. Suggest if you buy this, get the Kindle version. You may only be able to get this book and some swim trunks in your carry-on on the way to Maui.

What exactly is leadership? This is a question which cannot be answered easily. The reason is that leadership is a complex system of behaviors and interactions that can differ among people, is dependent on situations and cultural settings, and can change over time. Bass and Bass described it in this way (p. 15): "Different definitions and concepts of leadership have been presented in countless essays and discussions. Often, a two-day meeting to discuss leadership has started with a day of argument over the definition." Bass and Bass review numerous definitions for leadership, including (1) "leadercentric" definitions (e.g., leadership as persuasive behavior, as the initiation of structure, as the exercise of influence, and as the art of inducing compliance), (2) effect-oriented leadership definitions (i.e., leadership as an effect of interaction or as an instrument of goal achievement), and (3) definitions that describe the interaction between the leader and followers (e.g., leadership as a differentiated role, as a power relationship, as a process, or as a combination of elements), to name only a few. It becomes clear, as Bass and Bass point out (p. 23), that "the search for the one and only proper and true definition of leadership seems to be fruitless. Rather, the choice of an appropriate definition should depend on the methodological and substantive aspects of leadership in which one is interested."

I found that The Bass Handbook of Leadership: Theory, Research, and Managerial Applications contains the most comprehensive research- and literature-based information about the topic leadership. To provide more detail, the authors describe in the first part of the book the concepts of leadership, types and taxonomies, as well as models and theories of leadership.
