I had a pair of the bates white oxfords and recently wore them in a family member's wedding with my service dress whites. The heels feel apart in the middle of the wedding. They had dry rotted in the shoe box that I kept them in and the soles were literally turning to dust. There was a trail of white foam dust trailing me before they completely fell apart. I had only worn them two or three times prior to this and didn't have more than 10 hours of use out of them. The returns process is cumbersome.

Bates makes very cheap shoes that cost a great deal of money. The sole of this shoe will only last a short amount of time before it comes apart. Unfortunately there are few other options for military uniforms so you are stuck with these lousy shoes.

This is my second set of these uniform shoes to disintegrate on me. The second time happened today on my way to church - prompting me to add this review. You'll never know when it happens, but when it does, it will never be at an opportune time. The material used for the soles and heels are not durable, and it almost seems like they dry-rotted. I thought the first set that self-destructed were not normal, but after it happened a second time, that's when I knew this is just a poor quality shoe. These shoes were used only twice (not even any scuff marks anywhere) and stored in its original box before prior to its last use. DO NOT BUY THESE SHOES!! There are plenty of other oxfords around that are made with a higher quality material.

UPDATE: After sending an e-mail to Bates customer service, I was informed my shoes were going to be replaced without charge. I applaud them for doing this. I only hope the product they send me will last much longer than the previous one.

What a shame these shoes did not work out and that I had to return them. There's a raised edge on the back inside vertical surface that gave me serious heel blisters on both feet. I can feel the edge with my hand that's causing the problem. It is not present in a pair of black Bates that I previously purchased, and had hoped to have as good a fit and durability from this latest time. The vendor, Elite, was wonderful about trying to make good, but ultimately asked that I return for a refund.

Was wearing my shoes for the first time this year at Fleet Week in NYC. The heels disintegrated into dust in 10 minutes. Unbelievable, as a 30 year Navy man, have never seen a shoe fall apart with each step. Shoes made in Dec 2009, and rarely worn, stored in my closet at home. Same thing happened to my coworker, heels turned to dust! Beware if your shoes are over 4 years old.

If I could give these no stars, I would. Ever heard of the term "Bates Blowout"? It's when the sole of these crappy shoes dissolves, usually during an important event like a retirement or promotion. Don't waste your money! Doc Marten 1461's in white meet the uniform requirement and are actually worth the money.

I am a Registered Nurse and required to wear white scrubs at my place of employment. I am constantly in search of whit shoes that are solid (not sneaker-like), and cool (like wing-tipped Stacy Adams). I HAVE FINALLY FOUND THEM...!!! It only required one miss to determine what my true size was (shoes are in European sizes, I'm in the U.S.). I LOVE these shoes...!!! They LOOK so cool on me...!!! Since I have flat feet, I use Dr. Scholls custom fit orthotic inserts, and I'm good to go. I plan on purchasing additional pairs before they disappear off the shelves (which ALWAYS seems to happen when I fall in LOVE with a product).

2 pairs fell apart this year. Navy regs don't require that the sole is white. Find another white leather Oxford and boycott bates until they make a shoe that lasts.
