Do you feel like your feet are dragging at the end of the day? Is picking them up just so you can take a step exhausting? That's because most boots aren't made properly; they're just too heavy. Bates 5161 Men's 8 Inch Black Zero Mass Military Boots are designed to be lightweight, so your steps will practically float. The uppers are made with durable leather and YKK nylon side zippers that let you bypass the full-front lacing system. The flexible leather cleans up easily to keep your boots looking sharp, but more importantly it's durable to resist wear and tear. The lightweight construction won't bog you down. It also won't make you sweat. Inside, these boots are fully lined with breathable, moisture-wicking material that draws sweat away from skin to keep it cooler and dryer. The insoles are made with AureRight mildew proof materials in a lightweight, shock-resistant design. The anti-bacterial insoles are breathable, comfortable and soft under your feet. Compression-molded EVA foam creates a cushioning midsole layer. Tough cement construction creates a durable bond between sole and shoe. The durable rubber outsoles resist shock so your feet bounce back from impact. Wearing these Bates 5161 Men's 8 Inch Black Zero Mass Military Boots definitely won t be a drag. Regarding my arch support rating - I have somewhat flat feet, getting flatter all the time, so I needed extra arch support. I got some semi-custom orthotic insoles that work beautifully and make the Zero Mass boots supremely comfortable, even in hot weather.
The packaging from "PlusMore" was great - they had a sturdy shipping carton exactly big enough to hold the Bates box snugly. I get annoyed with the hugely excessive packaging that I frequently receive. Shipping was prompt and free. :-)
Very Lightweight - I have heavier tennis shoes.
Soft Leather - Very flexible - I have doubts about whether they will last more than year, but they seem to be holding up to abuse, glue, dropped metal and wood, so far.
Flexible sole with great grip.
Breath well - Again, better than tennis shoes.
Zipper seems sturdy and is holding up.
Seem true to size, but a little lose in the heel which is corrected with thick socks.
Good support, but not too much. My son can stand all day without complaining which is surprising for a 16 year old to not complain.
Overall: These are better and cheaper than some tennis shoes. Since he has to walk outside at his HS campus, my guess is this is what he will wear on rainy days.
I do a lot of work for events, so I am buying a pair of these for myself and putting a shine on them based on his experience. With pants over them, they look like nice dress shoes or high end tennis shoes.
Back Story (if you care):
Finding work boots is complicated. Buying them for your 16 year old son is more complicated. So this is a long story. When my son started work building sets for a local theatre company, he went in wearing the shoes he wore to school, Converse Chuck Taylor's. They are terrible shoes and stink as work shoes. After being on his feet for 7 hours his feet hurt so bad had trouble just walking.
A guy work with suggested US military issue Jungle Boots. He does similar, actual work, for my company unlike the people who sit at desks and call it work, so I took his advice. I could not find a pair in his size at the local Military Surplus, so I checked Amazon. They have pretty much everything you can get, but finding the right size and shoe is a bit of a challenge.
After reading the reviews, these seemed to fit the bill and they did.
I have had these for a few months now and have had some fun testing them out, plenty of hiking, camping, dirt bike riding, all in addition to wearing them for work and daily activities. They are water resistant all the way up but when you stand in a deeper puddle a little water will get in but not enough to soak your foot. Theres a little softer rubber that helps to support the arch, when kicking the coals around in the fire, the soft rubber shriveled up but I believe them to be fire resistant as well. You can walk up a wall with these.
