About the Author
Several of Laurie Shifrin's original quilt designs have been published by the renowned Seattle quilt shop In The Beginning, where Laurie works as a retail manager. One of her original quilts was published in Quilting Your Memories from That Patchwork Place(R). Many quilters will relate to Laurie's impressive collection of over 1,200 batik fabrics.

Also there is some history of batiks, how they are made, and helpful comments on how they differ from usual quilting fabric. This helps the beginner understand why they are less forgiving, and must be used with a bit of care. There's some color theory here as well.
The quilts are gorgeous and simply pieced for the most part, with easy cutting and no curves to sew, and the projects range in size.
It's a great beginner book to start with batiks and basics, and experienced quilters will find some instant-gratification projects here as well.
I bought it because it was less than $5 with shipping, and I was feeling jaded, looking for inspiration. For the price, I'll find it useful, but if you are about to spend $15 or more on a general quilting book, consider a magazine subscription. You'll get a lot of varied projects per issue, plus articles, how-to's and ads. Yes, ads! See the new fabric lines, get free patterns, and keep on top of trends with the ads. In general I consider quilting magazines a better buy than quilting books.
