Hush is a classic whodunit tale. Twice, Batman is sneak attacked while going about his normal activities of fighting crime. In the first case his bat rope is severed causing him severe bodily damage. Later, a sniper is able to somehow pop the Batmobile’s tire despite the fact that a blowout is next to impossible. Whoever is stalking The Batman is highly skilled, perhaps more so than his usual rogue’s gallery. This foe is using many of The Batman’s enemies to serve his purpose including Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Clayface and others. Hush was a great villain but current readers may not even be aware of who he is. Unfortunately, Hush Returns, which was not written by Jeph Loeb, was absolutely awful and did terrible damage to the character. He’s used occasionally but I don’t think any story has ever done justice to the original.
A DC Deluxe Edition is a hard cover book that is larger than the normal hardcover DC book. That’s about all they have in common. They might have crappy paper or high quality, glossy paper. They might have tons of extra material or none. Hush shows how you do a Deluxe Edition right. It includes high quality, glossy paper and 57 pages of extras. If there is a complaint it’s going to be that the paper is rather thin. I assume DC determines the paper thickness based on the volume of material. The Button Deluxe Edition had extremely thick paper, likely because it contained just four issues of material. Hush was 12 issues long. This is a great presentation of one of the best Batman stories ever. If you’re loving the current Batman stories I implore you to take a step back in time to before Batman ascended to his current level of perfection. You may see the current stories in a whole new light.
