About the Author

A one-time cartoonist, Ed Brubaker has been working as a writer since the early 1990s, and in that time his work has won several awards, including both the Harvey and Eisner Awards for Best Writer in 2007, and has been translated around the world. His comics credits include Batman, Catwoman, Gotham Central, and Sleeper for DC Comics and Daredevil, Captain America, and Criminal for Marvel. He lives and works in Seattle, Washington, with his wife, Melanie, and many pets.

Born in 1963 in the Year of the Rabbit, Doug Mahnke embarked on a love affair with comics at the age of five. He landed a job drawing comics for Dark Horse at the age of 24. Doug and writer John Arcudi collaborated on Dark Horse’s The Mask and their creator-owned series Major Bummer, originally published by DC. Since then Doug has worked on a wide variety of titles (including Superman: The Man Of Steel, JLA, Batman, Team Zero, Seven Soldiers: Frankenstein, Black Adam: The Dark Age and Stormwatch: P.H.D.) with such writers as Joe Kelly, Judd Winick, Chuck Dixon, Grant Morrison, Christos Gage and Ed Brubaker, just to name a few. He lives in the midwest with his wife and six kids, one dog, and a bunny named Suzie.

I Just started reading Batman comics having started with nothing except the movies. I read Year One first and was recommended this as second step. The Man Who Laughs is basically a spiritual sequel to Year One, adding elements of the Batman mythos I hoped to see, like Bruce's relationship with Gordon and the batcave and the spotlight bat symbol. The Man Who Laughs is a pretty solid joker story, kind of straightforward, I would rate it a 4/5 story-wise. If you're starting out like me and you want some early-career, first Joker encounter, this is where to go. It's a quick read, about 40-50 pages. As a note, the art is very nice and detailed - the joker on the cover creeps me out so much I don't keep the book in my room at night!

What makes this a 5/5 book is the second story, which you wouldn't know is there until you open it! This book includes another Batman story called "Made of Wood", by the same author, but it's about Batman fighting alongside golden age Green Lantern! "The Man Who Laughs" is satisfying, but Made of Wood is outstanding! Very pleasantly surprised cause I never imagined myself liking Green Lantern. I guess it's mostly just a detective story but I thought it had a nice fulfilling ending, which I appreciated. I honestly would have considered the $10 price tag to be almost a rip-off if it weren't for this second comic installment.

If you're on the fence about getting it, buy it at least for the second comic! Overall both stories have my approval and recommendation. I look forward to reading more of Batman's story!

Ed Brubaker and Doug Mahnke present a re-telling of the Joker's first appearance in Batman #1. Brubaker does a better job than most of staying true to the spirit of the original. There is material added, but there is no massive retcon and the characters are portrayed similarly to how they were at that time. The other story included in the collection is "Made of Wood" which was originally published in Detective Comics #784-786. The story features a Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, as he and Batman track down a serial killer.

It's doubtful that either of the stories presented in this collection will join the rarified group of must-have Batman tales like Batman: The Killing Joke and Batman: Year One . Does that mean it's not worth buying? Not by a long shot. The Man Who Laughs is an excellent re-telling of Batman's introduction to the Joker that includes a new take on how he learned to think like the Joker (to a point). Made of Wood has a pretty different feel, though both stories are about murderers, but is also above average. We've seen Batman portrayed as rude and arrogant so many times that I find it a pleasure when he works with someone like Alan Scott and shows him true respect. This characterization is much more in keeping with Batman's characterization over the decades than the jerk that we've seen in more recent years. Beyond that, the mystery is interesting and Green Lantern is tied into the story very well so he doesn't feel like he's being shoe-horned in.

This book is pretty easy to recommend to anyone looking for a couple of good Batman stories. Now that it's out in paperback, the price is very reasonable and the stories are well above average in quality. Read it, enjoy it, be happy.

When I got this, I've read lots of reviews and articles talking about how the story Batman: The Man Who Laughs is one of the greatest Batman (and Joker) stories ever told. I was also aware that this book also collected the other story Made of Wood featuring a Batman/Green Lantern (Alan Scott) team-up, but assumed that it would just be an OK story. However, after finishing the entire book today, I found that Made of Wood in fact overshadows The Man Who Laughs as a better story! The book was probably not marketed as such due to the fear of people not wanting to read about the 1940s Green Lantern (and who am I kidding? The Joker sells!), but trust Ed Brubaker as he creates a central heart to the story showing a unique dynamic between Batman and Alan Scott Green Lantern that is not found between Batman and another character. I agree with other reviewers that Made of Wood is just another detective murder story, but the characters featured in it, including Jim Gordon are what make this story stand-out!

As for the main feature of the book The Man Who Laughs, well I can see that it does deserve to be called one of the best Batman/Joker stories. It tackles The Joker's first attack on Gotham, and what an attack it was! The story also highlights Batman, 'Captain' Jim Gordon, and their relationship with each other (as Made of Wood also does). It also adds on the bases formed by Alan Moore's origin story for The Joker that was introduced in The Killing Joke.

In conclusion, I highly recommend buying this book for BOTH stories featured in it. I confess that I don't think I have ever read anything written by Ed Brubaker (probably because he unfortunately left DC Comics years back to Marvel, and I don't a lot of Marvel comic books), but after this, I understand why he is critically praised, and I hope he returns to DC Comics someday as he clearly knows how to tackle their characters and makes amazing stories with them!

NOTE: I don't like to minus stars from item reviews because of shipment and condition because that would be unfair to the product, but I would like to point out that I would minus two stars from Amazon itself as I have received the book dented at the corner of the book, and the bottom of the spine was ruined and dented as well.
