Editorial Reviews

La-La Land's Expanded Archival Collection returns to Gotham for this 2CD remastered and expanded presentation of Danny Elfman's magnificent score to the 1992 Warner Bros. motion picture blockbuster BATMAN RETURNS, starring Michael Keaton, Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito, directed by Tim Burton. Composer Elfman (BATMAN, MARS ATTACKS, WANTED, ALICE IN WONDERLAND) revisits his iconic theme and expertly weaves it into a sumptuous musical experience, bringing to life the film's breathtaking action and rich emotional and psychological underpinnings. Produced by Neil S. Bulk, Dan Goldwasser and MV Gerhard and mastered by James Nelson from Shawn Murphy's first generation three-track digital mixes, this limited edition release features more than 30 minutes of previously unreleased music, including alternate cues. The in-depth, exclusive liner notes are by John Takis and the art direction is by David C. Fein. This release is limited to 3500 Units.

The legendary music of Danny Elfman's scores is best exemplified in this dark and beautiful pieced together score. The mood of the film is made only more potently haunting with this music as a guide. It strikes you in the face with tracks like "Birth of a Penguin", while then calming your nerves (sort of) with "Selena Transforms", not to mention the classic Tim Burton-style circus music in "Batman vs. the Circus." But he overdoes himself with what may be the best music from any music score in "The Final Confrontation." If you love Elfman, Burton, and great music, this is an essential soundtrack to behold.

The score for Batman Returns is a weird and intriguing piece. The Batman theme is slower and not heard as much. The Penguin's sinister yet childlike theme is playful and dark while Catwoman's is a disturbing piece with violins and drums. Highly recommended.

The early 90's was the era of the dark knight batman persona. Tim Burton breathed new life in a character that the cinemas weren't ready to see beyond it's television incarnation. To that end, the entire team that produced Batman in the late 80's came back and worked to make lightening strike twice in Batman Returns. The one aspect of the film that felt like a real expounding from previous success, to that end, was the score. Dany Elfman made the score move and in deed, feel like an opera.
The music was a hallmark to the film and I highly recommend it for anyone.

I enjoyed this score. It doesn't feel as richly lush as the 1999 Batman score, but it does echo the feel of the movie. There are touches of a dark whimsy, pounding action, and sweeping themes. if you enjoy movie scores, you should certainly add this one to your collection.

This album is silmar to the first Batman Archival Soundtrack cd, 2 cd's of used and unused pieces of music from the Batman Returns(1992) movie by Danny Elfman. It also has a great booklet included with notes on each track and photographs from the movie as well. I can listen to this one as well and see the movie play out in my head. It's great to have these sountracks being expaned like this because I love the first two Batman movies with Michael Keaton they were the best!!!. And so is Danny Elfman's music!!!.

Batman Returns is a completely different beast than the 1989 Batman. Not only in themes, but also atmosphere, and tone. Elfman understood this, and completely reworked the already gothic Batman theme into an even darker version of the original. Selina's / Catwoman's theme is haunting, and beautiful. The penguin's theme is tragic, but powerful. With powerful choir, orchestral undertones, and some intense and zany action cues, this is one of Elfman's better efforts. Also, I would recommend the La La Land Records expanded issue.

Well, I've always been a huge fan of the original Batman soundtrack by Elfman...
But this is a less bombastic, darker, more intimate, and over-all a smaller sounding score than most fans would assume.

The excellent Mr. Clemmenson at "Soundtracks dot com" (the website responsible for 90% of my film score purchases) didn't give "Returns" a glowing review- but for good reasons:
In many ways, the second Burton/Keaton Batman FILM went bigger, bolder, and more complex.
But musically, Elfman kind of did the opposite... As a listening experience, this score sounds lighter, and much smaller.
Even the main theme for Batman sounds as if less musicians are playing it- even though it's basically the same group of musicians as the first film...

Now, after many listens, I've decided this is not a bad thing AT ALL when it comes to the music as a stand-alone experience, and it makes the two albums PERFECT for each other.

In short- if you love the "BATMAN" score, and you love the "EDWARD SCISSOR-HANDS" score, then this is the musical link between those two flavors.
Highly recommended for classical music lovers, film score fans, Danny Elfman followers, and just about anybody who just plain likes good music. But you really should own the first score to truly appreciate the second.
