PAUL POPE (b.1970) is an American writer/artist/designer living and working in New York City. He has been working primarily in comics and screenprinting since the early '90s, but has also done a number of projects with Italian fashion label Diesel Industries and, in the US, with DKNY. HIs recent collaboration with Errolson Hugh/Acronym for Nike’s AF1 debuted spring 2017. His media clients include LucasArts, NBC, Disney, Cartoon Network, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Conde-Naste, Kodansha (Japan), Sapporo (Japan), Dargaud Editions (France), EMI Canada, The Grateful Dead Estate, and The British Film Institute. His iconic Batman: Year 100, a science fiction take on the classic Batman origin tale, appears frequently on many Top 10 Batman story lists. In 2010 Pope was recognized as a Master Artist by the American Council Of The Arts. His short science fiction comic strip Strange Adventures (DC Comics)--an homage to the Flash Gordon serials of the '30s-- won the coveted National Cartoonist Society's Reuben Award for Best Comic Book of the year. He has won 4 Eisners to date and 1 Harvey Award. His latest book, Battling Boy, debuted at #1 on the New York Times best-seller list, his third book to hit the NYT Top 10.

He is currently working on Battling Boy 2, the second book in the epic science fiction/fantasy series for First Second/MacMillan, featuring a an unlikely pair of two young superheroes-in-training forced to make an alliance and defeat an overwhelming army of monsters.

Just when you think you can't read another Batman book and then Paul Pope makes you choke on that thought. Right from the beginning you are shown what you came for and it never lets up. Not only is Paul's art spectacular but Jose's colors are next level. Support books that have colorists in the style of Jose that compliments line art and doesn't drown in "3D effects". Kudos to creative team and DC for greenlighting this.

This is not just a great Batman comicbook story, but one of my favorite comics ever. And that, not so much of what this means to the medium in the way that Watchmen,Dark Knigh Returns,Asteryos Polyp,etc.did and still do. But in a way that... this is a greatly executed comic book story that praises the medium much more than most give it credit to. Paul Pope is a master storyteller, not the same way that Alan Moore or Frank Miller was/is. He is his own artist in a different way. He "lives" comics in his own distinct style as truly an artform that demands respect on its own special way. He tells a dystopian story not that far away in the future, and drops us right in the middle "of things" and every time that you read this story you get something more... and the second, third time new areas of story unfolds in you mind, hints and pieces that are always there but were not meant for you to consciously get them the first time... but (more) felt. Do not get me wrong, the greatness of this story in part lies to its "appearing" simplicity and you are welcome to read it only once and enjoy it. But if you like it enough and read it again you really enjoy it even more. Greatly designed and executed, at least to my undestanding. I can of course undestand that it is a matter of taste Paul Popes "style" of art, some may not like it, perfectly understandable, but it really is a pity not to praise his incredible storytelling technique and efficiency. One of the few comic (and not only) books that every time I read it I truly enjoy it... in a slightly different way. And what do you expect me to say about "Broken Nose"... or... How cool is that Pope? A true artist.
Invest in this book... unless you do not like the art style, everything here is top-notch. Wish for an absolute editon...

I had not known about this series until recently. When I learned it had won two Eisner Awards and after reading so any positive reviews, I thought I'd check it out. I was stunningly disappointed. The art looks sloppy, ugly, rushed and is, at times, confusing. The story is simplistic. The antagonists are two-dimensional. Many questions raised go unexplained. I envy all of those who love this book. Clearly, whatever its is that appeals to its fans it went over my head.

In Conclusion after the main story you get three more mini Story’s Called Berlin Batman,Teenage Sidekick and Broken Nose Written/Drawn from Mr Pope plus Art galley and concept Artwork.I personally Love this Dark Knight story that can be taken as Legend or Myth .Along with the Dirty Grey Smoke Fumes,Black Metal Motorcycles, Ice Hockey Wearing Goons,Pitch Black Shadows and neon Lights Splashed with Bright Blood red dripping Colours Creeping down the page.
