In short, the BatteryMINDer® 1500 earns 5 stars. That's the short and the sweet of it. I arrive at this rating after over 6 months of testing. In my opinion, the 1500 deserves more than to simply describe it with brief superlatives. So, additional comments follow. For the most part, I skipped repeating specifications that can be found in the operator's manual (free download at batteryminders.com) to focus on my experience with the 1500.

Be cautious using this charger for AGMs. Some AGMs have a specialized charge profile that the 1500 is not designed to supply. I believe the 1500 is suitable for use only with CERTAIN Optima batteries. Consult the battery manufacturer as well as batteryminders.com website to match the appropriate charger to your AGM and aviation batteries.

Assessing desulfaters in terms of what they can actually DO for a battery in a consumer environment can be painfully slow. It can take an older or abused battery weeks or months to respond to desulfating action. It's safe to say that some batteries will reach a state where they won't respond to desulfation at all.

It's important to understand why desulfating is important. Lead sulfate is deposited on a battery's plates anytime the battery is discharged. Flooded batteries are known for self discharging even with no load applied. They can also discharge while charging if the charging current/voltage supplied can't offset self discharge or parasitic draws.

Recharging the battery returns the sulfate to solution in the electrolyte, thereby restoring the depleted charge.Read more ›

I retired from a company that uses many batteries for backup plants. These batteries are basically giant versions of a car battery except ours had a lifespan of 20-40 years. I knew that automoble batteries could be made to last much longer if the proper equipment could be found to maintain them. Until this unit was available the equipment on the market was way beyond the means of the average owner. The primary reason for the end of many batteries is sulfate build up on your battery plates.
This unit will maintain a battery and extend its life by roughly a factor of 4X. You can use it to reclaim batteries that have been lost due to sulfation.
I use a previous model to maintain batteries used for my 23KW back up generator. I bought this newer model for my father -in-law. The only difference in this and the older model is the newer unit has a slightly higher charge current and the newer unit is temperature compensated. It is common for many units on the market to boil batteries when charging in high ambient temps. Boiling is not good for a battery.
Caution*** do not try to use this unit to charge a dead battery. It was not designed for this and will not be fun watching the black smoke.

Taking good care of flooded lead-acid batteries that aren't used regularly can be a complicated chore. In the "bad old days" we would put basic battery chargers on the batteries in the off season that were supposed to go to a trickle charge when the batteries were fully charged. But it always seemed that the batteries would get overcharged and loose fluid. To avoid that, we'd take the chargers off the batteries and they would self discharge and become sulfated.

It's much easier now. Modern multi-stage maintainers are supposed to constantly monitor battery voltage and adjust their voltage to keep the batteries fully charged but not over-charged.

The BatteryMINDER 1500, in my opinion, is the most sophisticated and reliable of these small modern battery maintainers.

I've owned several maintainers, and my experience has been that the other popular brand, BatteryTENDERS(don't confuse the similar brand names) hardly ever lasts more than one season and has a tendency to randomly over charge the batteries. One of these only lasted two months.

On the contrary, my BatteryMINDERS (both current and past models) have been 100 per cent reliable. They always kept the batteries, both golf cart deep cycle and starting, at perfect full charge without over charging. They supply the exact voltage specified by Trojan, the manufacturer of my batteries. They also keep batteries from sulfating and can rejuvenate a moderately sulfated battery back to life. I highly recommend the BatteryMINDER 1500.

This is a great product for maintaining and desulfating your batteries. The 1.5amp does make it slower for actual charging but as long as your battery is not drained too low, it should be acceptable. Truly plug and charge, no buttons to fiddle with, no worries of overcharging or boiling your battery. I have this and the higher BatteryMinder model 12248. This is the best bang for the buck. It would be the first model I would recommend for those looking for something like this for their batteries. If you have a standard sealed / flooded battery, this is all you really need.

This unit plugs in the outlet and comes with a long 10' cord, it also comes with 2' clamps with bullet connectors and a 2' ring terminal adapter with bullet connectors. There is a auto ambient temp sensor attached to the unit as well. The minimum voltage required is 3.0V.

Plus it comes with a 10 year warranty! That's hard to come by in today's products.
