Battle Chess is a great game, but don't buy this version. Buy the *Collection* instead. It has 4 games in one: Battle Chess(DOS), Chinese Chess(DOS), Battle Chess Enhanced(WindowsVGA), and Battle Chess 4000(WindowsS-VGA). The last two games, graphically, are outstanding and will work flawlessly with Windows 95/98.

I don't know what you are expecting. I don't know what you hope Battle Chess will be. I don't know how low your expectations are. But whatever your answers to those questions are, DO NOT BUY THIS CD. It is awful. I had one years ago that I played on my old MacIntosh, and my kids would delight in watching the pawns joust with one another and the queen zapping other players. But, unbelieveably, the graphics have gotten worse. It is too fast, all the action occurs without any drama. The color almost spoils it. I was so disappointed, and my children, who were looking forward to playing chess with this program, were immediately disinterested.
This CD is worse than it was 8 years ago.

Well, actually, I enjoy this game VERY much. But despite what you might read here (and hopefully it's corrected soon) this game is NOT meant for Win 2000 or WinME. I already had this game on a Win95 Machine, but when I traded up(?) to a WinME system, I lost ANY and ALL games that run under DOS with sounds. Anywhat, if you're running Win98 or earlier, you will enjoy this game.

Okay, the Battle chess collection does have two more games than this bundle but the bottom line is that it only works if you have Windows 95/98 and DOS 3.1 or higher. For those of us who do not possess outdated computers but long for these classic games should get this bundle. I had the collection, but could not get it to work. I then bought this bundle for only $6.15! (and the price just seems to be getting better. When I popped it into my computer, I was delighted to finally play battle chess and battle chess II. The only problem is that the sound for Chinese Chess comes from the PC's internal speakers (really, this isn't a problem, as it sounds basically the same for this game). So if you have an old computer with Windows 95-8 and DOS, then by all means, buy the collection, but if you have an XP, this will work (I don't think it works on 2000 or Me). Hope this helps.

I taught my kids how to play chess on this game when we had an old Commadore computer a few years back. It was really kid freindly back then with pawns jousting and some of the captured pieces being turned into toads. Kids and adults couldn't get enough of it.

I bought the new version hoping to let my youngest six year old have the same experiance (it is rated for six and up). The new version however is violent and sleezy. The pieces graphically beat each other up and the queen struts like a hooker across the board. At one point when the red king challenged the blue queen, they grabbed each other in a passionate kiss, and she pulled a knife on him. He promptly swore and killed her. Just what you want your child to see and learn.

At the novice level it never makes a mistake, unlike as if playing with another beginner. This makes it so that she has no chance of winning, which can be really discouraging to someone new to the game.

The angle of the board makes it difficult to determine which square the players are on, and at one point it wouldn't even allow a legitimate move on our part.

They have taken all the fun out of this game, it was a useless purchase.

Battle Chess is an excellent game. Downloading onto our Windows 98 was a bit tedious but once we read the Read Me ( START, RUN, then type D:/ )from the CD and learned the right way to download it, we haven't had a problem with it. Don't use the auto install window that pops up.
The Battle Graphics are fun to watch even when you are losing.....badly. The game is very smart, even on level 1 setting.

This game does have it's interaction, but fails in the unique department. Games that are out of date don't automatically make them bad. Doom 1&2 are timeless in their own generation. This game however, fails because the engine that runs it, is not hard at all. I have a rating of around 1100 on a ten min time limit, and that's not saying much. But I managed to bet it quite often. When the pieces battle, it's more of a comic relief then anything else. It's cute at first, but when you get into the core of playing some serious chess, it's more of an annoyance. The pieces are to cartoony, and the time it takes the pieces to interact with each other, is way... to long. I would love to see action pieces interact with each other in the most brutal way as one piece takes a square, but it just doesn't meet the criteria of it. And don't fall for that Collection series either. That's what I got. Instead of having just one bad game, you'll have a list of 4 bad games in one. I wish more game developers focused more on chess engines and how they could improve the interactions with them, like the developers of Quake or Doom. Hell even Master Chief". No, instead what do we get? Just point, shoot, kill, game over, on to the next match.

You sold me!!! Oh Ya!! I love the violence, the sleeze, just the ticket to jazz up a boaring game of chess!

Yup, I've had Battle Chess since the old Win3.1 daze, but I really wish they would update it to today's standards. Improve the graphics, and like one of the others stated 'add some drama to the battles', perhaps even add an adult 'R' level (lets put some real sleeze into that slut Queen!!)
