Editorial Reviews

Confirmation of extraterrestrial life appears on television screens across the world as a massive spacecraft breaks through the atmosphere on a crash course into the Atlantic Ocean. A young paramedic, Greg Baker, signs up to fight for his planet against the invaders. Baker joins Special Forces members as the squad medic as they escort a classified package by chopper over enemy territory. When their chopper is shot down they find themselves surrounded and outnumbered. Desperate to return to his wife's side and haunted by nightmares, Baker find that his role in the war has quickly become much larger than he could have ever imagined. The mysterious package may be the key to turning the tide of the war, and possibly to saving all of humanity, but Baker must decide whether to protect it or sacrifice it to ensure his own survival.

This movie sucks! Crapy Plot, crapy video, crapy sound, stupid ending, most of this was filmed in the dark. The "aliens" looked like men with cheap halloween masks. I haven't seen this bad of a sci fi movie since the 1950's. What a waste of time and money. Did I say I hated it? Learned my lesson to first read reviews and or watch clips before committing to spend my time and money on this.

The story centers around Baker (Kevin Johnson) an EMT who is now in the Canadian army fighting alien invaders called squids. This is a low budget film as it focuses on a half dozen or so men walking through the woods shooting at stuff we don't see. The film opens with Baker listening to a very irritating relaxation tape which includes one of the longest backwards countdown in film history since "WarGames" (1983).

There isn't much to see. The destruction on the DVD cover is never seen in the film, just Canadian trees. One guy in the film wears a gas mask for half the film, just in case. Very sad.

Parental Guide: F-bomb. Sex. Near nudity.

Might be the worst movie I have ever seen. I would rather go to the dentist for a root canal than watch any part of that movie ever again.

I almost gave up ten minutes in, but decided to try a little harder. Fifteen minutes in I considered by duty done. If you value your time, skip it.

BAD, BAD, BAD! It appears that the Canadian military never made it out of the mid 70's. Sound is bad, the acting is bad, and you can almost see the strings holding up the help's. It looks like this was made by a group of college kids for their drama class and that is giving it more credit than it is worth. I'm glad I got this for nothing but I still feel cheated.

BAD, BAD, BAD!

There are good aspects to video production becoming so affordable, and, of course, there are bad aspects. One might say "many bad aspects," but I'll just leave it at "bad." One of the downsides is that any Tom, Dick, or Harry can - with a reasonable commitment of resources - throw together a film, take it on the independent or festival circuit, and secure a distributor. This doesn't mean that the picture is one that needs to find an audience, however; rather, it means that the people behind it saw enough value to complete the thing AND the company who puts their name on it believes they might profit from the efforts expended. The best of the `good aspects' is that means some creators may inevitably break through that glass ceiling keeping them outside of the film industry; they'll get invited in, where more willing investors just might help them make their dreams come true.

What we're left with, though, are the stepping stones to that goal. I suspect BATTLE EARTH is one such stepping stone product. It's sprinkled with enough good ideas to understand the `how' and `why' of getting made, but that's about all it's sprinkled with.

(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of plot and characters. If you're the kind of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I'd encourage you to skip down to the last two paragraphs for my final assessment. If, however, you're accepting of a few modest hints at `things to come,' then read on ...)

Mankind - yet again - has been dealt a superior blow, and civilization as we know it has been mostly wiped out.

It clearly shows this movie was a low budget film and first time making a movie. Don't waste your time watching it.

The initial story started out as a fairly good idea but then it went to "Hell in a hand basket". The guys that played the lead roles were so not lead material and had no real knowledge of several Military acronyms ie. Charlie Foxtrot? What was that suppose to mean? After 10 years in the military I never used that one. FUBAR yes but CF? Say what? does that stand for camp fire? Who knows. The costumes for the bad guys was kinda okay so kudos for the costume person but the photographer did them no credit by showing them in a nice crisp shot, why not fuzzy it up a bit and not show how it was made? And give me a break the big "secret" Was a kids football wrapped in saran wrap? Come on you could have at least gone big time and gone to the Walmart and bought some camo tape and maybe some paint to make it look a bit more alien and perhaps something besides a football as a secret weapon or whatever that was suppose to be. By the way how come it was so heavy when it was in the fishing box but so much lighter out of the box that the other guys could handle it with one hand and just haul it around in a 45lb ruck? Ah so many mistakes in one little movie. I would suggest that the producer and director go back and review then re shoot this one, it might turn out to be a decent movie is the did.
