As the daughter of a fierce Tiger Mother, I avoided this book for the longest time. This book was bittersweet for me. At moments it was hard to read, the stories mirroring my own experiences, albeit too close for comfort. I felt I would be doing a disservice to Amy Chua if I didn't complete this book, so I stuck with her.

Resist the negative reviews out there, a lot of people judge this book before completing it. This is a story of a woman raising her children with her best intentions. Her method worked for one daughter and it didn't for the other. Writing this book took bravery and self awareness. She didn't have to share her story, but I'm so glad she did.

Amy caught a lot of flack for being so hard on her kids, but the key to this book is that she admits that with the younger daughter, that method didn't work. Even so, Lulu learned the most valuable lesson - determination, focus, and discipline. I like that Amy is honest about how she behaved and why, and I like that she admits that she knew when she was getting it wrong, and couldn't make herself course correct.
I treat my son with the same expectations that Amy had in the book, I'm not mean like Amy was, but I expect certain things from him because I know he has the capability to do everything that is asked, perfectly (with practice, that is). His attitude has changed too. He understands that practice, on math or clarinet, actually works. If only for this one thing, this book was completely worth the read.

I found the writing to be very intelligent,witty,and insightful. Brutally honest; I found myself agreeing with her perceptions regarding the way some "Westerners" raise their children. This book is a very entertaining read,but I learned a lot from it,too. It takes a very brave and strong woman to sacrifice being liked by her children, in order to give them the gift of being exceptional human beings,and having experiences their mall-going peers will never have. Having your children not appreciate the love it took to do what was best for them( even while fighting your own doubts),is an exquisite pain to which most good parents can relate; and is well conveyed in this book. I put this book on my "wish list" after seeing an inept interview on the "today" show. I "got" what the author was trying to say,and thought she handled the bashing from an interviewer that obviously didn't read the book,quite well. I admired the author,and I'm glad I finally got around to reading her book.

I love Amy's book so much. At first, I ordered it with skepticism as I have been reading and experiencing so much pressure from the college application process myself. So I was heavily against the idea of forcing kids to their limits and beyond. Moreover, I have read tons of negative reviews and critics on her book. But then Amy's humorous accounts and sincere stories have captured me. I finished the whole book in one evening and kept admiring her candid way of raising her two daughters into such talented and brave young women, just like their mother. She only wants the best for her kids. No mom wants to be a tiger in others’ eyes, but she is willing to be laughed at and to confront criticism for her daughters’ future. The best testimony to her effort is Sophia and Lulu’s presence and their acknowledgement of Amy’s effort.
I highly recommend this book to any parents and young adults.

My book club loved it

This has been the most popular book my book club has done this year. We didn't necessarily agree with her parenting style, but we were all fascinated by the book and it generated a great discussion. (We're all moms.) I thought it would make me angry, but not so. I immediately "got" the author's subtle humor in showing the sometimes ridiculous way she parents. It's self deprecating humor - the way I might tell a slightly exaggerated story about myself to make a point. And I was glad to have read the book because there are certainly times when I could -- and should -- push my children a little harder. For instance, the other day while teaching my teenaged daughter to cook, she complained about chopping the onions, so (as usual) I started to do it for her -- then remembered the Tiger Mom and made her chop those onions! I disagree with many of her ideas, but found the book quick and easy to read and very entertaining. I kept turning pages. Also educational, because we have a lot of high achieving Asian kids in this area (my own children's friends), and now I feel like I "get" them. I'll be a better mother for having read this book.

I have heard negative talking about this book, so I didn't buy it right away, I borrowed a copy from our local library. After I finished reading, I bought a copy from Amazon. It is a book that I like to keep a copy in my own library.

I don't completely agree with Amy's way raising her two daughters, but I enjoy reading this book, I like her honesty, sense of humor, and her hardworking. She didn't try to paint a picture that she is a perfect mom, she just wrote her own experience of raising her two daughters.

Many people hated that Amy pushed her daughters too hard, but I see Amy pushed herself harder than her daughters. She works harder than any one else. She is a law professor, teaching at Yale Law School, she wrote her book while raising her two children, she learned about piano and violin so she could supervise her daughters practice, she arranged many trips, she wrote notes to her daughters so to bring joy to them, she took care of their two dogs. I was very touched that she brought her mother-in-law to her home when her mother-in-law was fighting cancer, and she visited her sister many times while her sister was fighting leukemia. She does so many things. I admire Amy with my full heart.

I actually really liked this book. I found the author very funny. People need to lighten up. This woman obviously realizes her way of parenting is extreme and even acknowledges that it worked for one daughter and not the other. I found her to be very witty and at the same time vulnerable about trying to find the best parenting style that fit her family.
