Excellant Book And Only Book On Battle

The British and Canadian attack on the Reichwald forest in early 1945 was the last big battle the British fought in Europe in Word War II. This book is the only book on the subject I know of. It is an excellant book, that describes the attack from mainly the Allied viewpoint. It is short(159 pages) with many excellant photos and maps the show the advances(on a divisional leval) of the attack. There was never any dought about who would win-the Allies had much larger forces, and if they were willing to pay the price in blood, could not be stopped. They paid the price and won the territory they needed to launch the offensive that conquered Northern Germany. This book has my highest possible recommendation.

Interesting, with lots of good information, but dry in many places and seemed to lack in others.

This is a good review of both the circumstances that led up to the battle and the battle itself. The author covers, in some detail, the situation facing both sides in the fall and winter of 1944/45, effectively setting the stage for how and why the battle happened when and where it did and how it fit into or adjacent to other actions (such as the nearby failed combined Allied Arnhem airborne attacks and the American frustrations in the area of the Ruhr Damns).

The focus of the book, of course, is with the battle in and around the Reichswald forest between the cities of Cleve and Nijmegen. He talks extensively about the weather's impact on the battle and how it negated most of the Allied advantages, giving the Germans time to respond and mount an effective defense. Eventually the allies struggle through, seemly more from determination and weight of material than any great operational achievements.

The author draws on information from both sides and discuses the leadership of both sides, though he does talk about Allied leaders much more so. In places the book is very interesting to read, but in others it seems to drag as he plods through individual unit histories in a somewhat dry fashion, and the book, like the battle itself, doesn't seem to end so much as drain away like the waters that characterized the battle leaving you wondering if the author himself couldn't find a good way to end his story.

For those looking for details about this battle this is a good reference book to have. For others it may not be something that they would find engrossing, which is unfortunate as there is not a lot on this battle in the literature.

Nazi Germany fought in a german forest

I read this short book, here in Brazil.This book is full of photos(all of them black&white), short,correct and concise.The subject of this good book is the battle of Reichswald, a forest in Germany.This battle was in february and march, 1945.Nazi Germany was defeated in this battle, but in fact, nazi Germany fought, until the last day.The defects of this book are small.One defect are its maps, that are a little weak.
