As a military history buff, I've read hundreds of books and articles on World War II, including at least a dozen books about the Battle of Stalingrad. With so many books written about it, Stalingrad is one of the most studied battles in history. There's no new ground in this short book about the battle, but it's a good read for someone who wants a concise education in an hour or so. The author covered the highlights of the 200-day battle that resulted in the near total destruction of the city and the loss of the German 6th Army.

There were enough anecdotes in the book to keep it from being a dry recitation of dates and facts. The book has no maps, however, a significant omission in my opinion. Also, a bibliography of other reading sources for interested readers would have been helpful.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a great fast read when you don't have a lot of time to read a thick history book.

It contained a lot of detail and left the more insignificant "stuff' out. The Kindle version had lots of spelling errors, missing words and skipped line that made it confusing at times to read. Although I got this version for .99 the other books in the series sell for $2.99. It's not worth paying the higher price for such a short book. In fact you are better off buying other military history books that are 5-6 times longer for $3.00 or less.
I will stick to the larger books, I get more read for the money . I will just have to read it in sections over a longer period of time.

As I have said before, I love this series of Brief Histories. They condense everything down to the essentials, and present them in a readable format. In this one, I liked the short backgrounds given of some of the chief personalities of the battle.

As I endeavor to learn more about the Holocaust I find myself involved in battles fought with the Germans. Thank goodness for this long protracted battle in Stalingrad with the Russians. The battle lasted approximately seven months with hand to hand battle with knives and bayonets at times...house to house battle with first one winning and then the other. I think snipers must have been majorly important as the buildings were cleared....and the sniper is highlighted at end of book with brief bio and how he taught and organized other snipers. There are other short bios at end of book highlighting those military who stood out in the famous (infamous) battle. Without this battle of Stalingrad the war might have turned out differently. This cold horrendous time let the Germans know they would not rule the world. The men were freezing, starving, not enough ammunition, etc. Russia at its coldest help show Hitler he did not own the world. This is a good read and short. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in history or military maneuvers. My book was downloaded onto my Kindle from Amazon and you can get yours there also.

I've read other books about World War II that briefly touch on The Battle of Stalingrad but this book gives you a more detailed look at the conflict. Since it's an entry in the A Very Brief History it can be read in a half hour.

This book is easily readable and suitable for everyone even for the elementary students. I particularly like it that at the end of the book, some brief biographies of the main characters are presented. In this way, it summarizes the
whole book and gives you extra information at the same time. I would recommend it to anyone who likes history but not wanting to spend several weeks reading a single book.

I found the overview of the book concise and not at all redundant. Very informative and interesting as well as entertaining. It is sad that humans hold little esteem for life and high regards for power. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in history.

A concise summary with a military focus. Coverage of leading people involved is relegated to a final chapter rather than integrated into the account. That is, the work reads more like an encyclopedia than am historical narrative. Still very readable and useful.
