Editorial Reviews
Review
"In this 287-page hardback book, wargames terrain modeler Paul Davies, author of numerous magazine articles on the subject, takes the reader through the process of creating a visually appealing yet practical terrain over which miniature battles may be fought. The techniques involved in the making of a basic landscape are explained, such as terrain cloths and tiles, custom or sculpted terrain, and this is followed by a series of projects showing how this can be adapted to suit different periods and/or geographic locations. There are then numerous sections on adding rivers and ponds, islands cliffs and hills, trees, walls, fences and screens, hedges, gates, cultivated fields, roads, bridges, defenses and buildings. All these projects have step-by-step instructions and are illustrated with over 400 specially taken color photos, taking the reader through the various stages of construction to the finished model. There is no doubt that this is a practical and useful guide, both to the specific items which are featured, but also in general construction terms. The book should be well received by wargamers and diorama builders alike. Recommended."

I have been in model Railroading, war gaming, and even Dungeons and dragons over my 60 plus years. This is the best "how to" make everything for model terrain that you need from scratch reference that I have seen in my life! Well illustrated and easy to follow along.

If you're interested in making wargaming or diorama terrain then this book is worth a look. Some things I knew and some method I've been using for years, but there were other elements that I hadn't heard of or even considered before and I'm certain I will use some of them in the future.

After watching and hearing a few reviews of this book, some showing several pages which portrayed a book full of buildings of all types to be made, including an entire settlement of various Viking houses, a meeting house, smithy etc.
Shown in full colour is a plethora of American Civil War terrain including a beautiful plantation house, rows of battle troops against walls, with roads leading past fences of various types, to outbuildings in the distance.
There is shown an entire ancient city showing complex buildings with columns, cobbled highways, ornate additions to statues, monoliths and plazas etc.
I hope you get the idea of what impression these reviews and the odd pages that had been turned and shown in these reviews had left me thinking what was in store in this nearly 300 page book.
Nothing of the sort is in it.
The author can certainly make wattle and daub sections - he shows us on 3 separate occassions, in 3 different builds, all the same technique, with the same end result. Wow !
As for the American Civil War buildings .... oh dear.
The plantation house is included just for show as what "could" be made.
So are the outbuildings.
What you are shown how to make, is a muddy road, some rail and stile fencing, and bugger all else !
As for the great antiquated city... there are no masterpieces of constructural architecture here either.
After showing how to make the canal !!! Yes I did say canal ( how this is a building I just can't fathom ), you get to make...... wait for it..... a bridge !
No Roman amphitheaters, no idyllic Roman houses with spas, bath houses and market strewn streets. That's it. Zip NADA !
You do however get to make 2, (yes I did say 2) buildings from the Viking collection, namely a single story house with a teddy bear fur roof, and a long house meeting room - virtually the same, but the roof is shaped a little differently, and this time you use a flower basket planter for the roof.
The tiles on the 2 remaining buildings to be made are still made the 50 year old way - by cutting up cereal boxes in to lengths, and snipping small triangles out to make tiles, and glueing the strips overlapping.
There isn't a single technique used in this book that isn't at least 30 years old !
There's no mention of the new modern advancements made in the last 15 years or so of the rolling pin method to imprint on foam, creating a miriad of possible designs from companies such as Green Stuff World.
Neither is there any mention of using resin or plaster in molds to make sheets of pantiles, which can then be cut to fit. There's no MDF, not even a piece of foam board in sight.
If I had purchased this book around 30 years ago, even 20 years ago, I would have been extremely happy and thought it a wonderful book, but these days it's dated, with no new information on how to do things, and after waiting eagerly for 3 weeks for this book to arrive, I am left feeling deflated, and utterly ripped off.
Don't get me wrong, It's a nice book, just dated. The pictures are lovely, big..... very big in fact, but the first 150 pages are wasted. The book in my opinion only starts to tell you about "Making Buildings" at around page 170. Everything before that is superfluous waffle. If you have never heard of terrain making or never watched Blue Peter and stuck stuff together, then you will find this book entertaining, informative and educational. But if like me you have any experience making terrain, then bypass it, safe your £20 and go watch a YouTube 'how to' video instead. You will probably get more information and it's free.

A broad coverage for the beginner
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 20, 2016Verified Purchase
Probably as good a book as could be produced - covering such a lot of ground - no pun intended - but there's not a lot new here for the average club war gamer. Nicely produced, the author clearly knows his stuff and there's certainly lots of interesting material for someone starting out. The problem is that there's so many elements to cover, it's difficult to do much in depth. Really needs separate books on constructing model terrain, buildings etc - but the best sources of information are found on line - bags on You Tube - in fairness, much of that is pretty awful!

Excellent Compendium

Admitted, a lot of the techniques shown are basic (and known to many modellers) ... but all in all this profusely illustrated book is just the right thing if you want to get serious with terrain modelling. As a wargamer, that is, railway and scale modellers with a tendency to pursue ultra-realism and exact scale will find the methods (and outcome) a bit "rough and ready". Recommended with this caveat ... which should not be needed, as there is a clue in the book's title.
