Young adult can sure annoy me since I'm not a young adult - I'm a very seasoned romance reader. This book however.....made me smile and was downright silly at times, but the romance aspect was just so sweet.
We have a rocker who was once quite the player.
We have a young woman who was horrifically attacked and is still healing (emotionally).
We get two people who are drawn to one another and the rocker is just plain enamored with a woman who shows him nothing but hostility.
Jake (our rocker with the mohawk, tattoos, and piercings) is determined to win Aubrey (black-gothy-pink tipped hair and tattoos a-plenty). Together they have to be quite startling! A fascinating duo, to be sure.
Good story. Some bad editing that even I noticed and I rarely notice such stuff. Still.....loved the premise and parts of this book were downright hysterical. Campy, corny, sexy, and cute. I'm planning to read book two in this series because I read many of the reviews and feel Ms. Monroe is honing her writing skills......just like all writers do and that is ONE BOOK AT A TIME! I love watching a writer learn, improve, and sharpen her skills.
NOTE: this story had me humming an old song from 1973, written by David Gates, called 'Aubrey'. Very sweet song sung by BREAD (yah...I know that dates me....LOL).
aside from those errors, this story was fantastic! i love the (new?) style of books being in first person & split between the two main characters. i love stories that have the couple together throughout, with no crazy misunderstandings that go on for chapters, where the conflicts are outside of the couple & they work together to get through them. Battlescars has all of that, an interesting plot, fun characters and deep storytelling. i recommend this, but implore the author to maybe do a re-edit of the book ... : ) i'll be ordering the sequels. (small edit - unfortunately, the other stories in the series fall into the very traps i mentioned in this review of things i DON'T like. *sigh* but THIS book i highly recommend. jake & aubrey are one of my favorite couples!)
Besides a few typos and parts where things just seemed to move along way too quickly with little explanation, it had a lot of interesting twists and turns and definitely, the sexy scenes between Aubrey and Jake were hot but not too explicit.
There was a lot of pretty disturbing and sickening violence that occurs towards Aubrey (both in present day and past) but that is what makes her the tough survivor she is and the strong partner that Jake needs to be by his side. Battlescars definitely refers to more than the name of Jake's band....
All in all I enjoyed reading this book and am ready to jump into Part 2 (Blake and Piper's story)...which I am looking forward to because of the kinky chemistry those two had in this book.
"The key to finding lasting love is to find someone who loves you, battlescars and all."
In Battlescars you meet Aubrey Thompson! She is one of those people who you know not to mess with! She will tell you exactly what she is thinking and where you can go without blinking! I love her smartass comments and how she puts people in their place! But in the same sentence she is vulnerable and you can tell is hiding behind that smart attitude. Someone has hurt Aubrey and Jake Parker has every intention of breaking down her walls and claiming her! Jake is the sexy as hell lead singer for Battlescars. He is well known for his reputation as a bad boy ladies man! But what you see in the tabloids is not all that there is to him! Yes he is completely "balls to the wall" in everything he does, but he also is so sweet! I mean seriously some of the sweet stuff he does for Aubrey (swoon) and even other people… made me want to find my own Jake!
"My Granny always says, 'women are like angels, when someone breaks our wings we continue to fly around on our broomsticks because we're flexible like that."
These two first meet when Aubrey's dads company flies Jake and his band around for a last minute tour. Aubrey didn't want to go but when her dad asked she agreed and becomes their flight attendant for the whole tour. Jake is immediately attracted to Aubrey but also finds her a challenge, because she won't even acknowledge him! Little does Jake know that Aubrey despises rock stars… but that is all part of her past and she refuses to give into Jake's charm. Just as she tells herself that, she starts feeling comfortable around him… and that doesn't usually happen around guys!
"Something weird was going on… I might actually like Jake Parker."
It will be a long road for them because they both have deep scars and are still healing! But Jake has to get Aubrey to open up and trust him! And Aubrey is scared because she doesn't know if she can risk getting hurt again! I am definitely Team Jake!!! I loved him and thought he was so sweet and romantic and SWOON WORTHY! A great start to what promises to be an amazing series! Can't wait to get to know more of these characters!!!
