Great Soundtrack - But Be Sure You're Getting The Right One!

The picture on this page at the time of this writing shows the first ( and best ) re-release of the classic 1978 MCA album on compact disc. However, the track listing is for the late 1990's re-recording by Stu Phillips with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, on the Varese Sarabande label. If you want the ORIGINAL soundtrack album as it was released in 1978, you'll want to stick with the first release.

The original album was first made available ( legally ) on CD on the German label "edel" in 1993. This release is clearly discernible by the subtitle "KAMPFSTERN GALACTICA" in small type under the original logo ( see picture above ). This release was fully licensed, and used the original master tapes for it's source material, so the sound is bright and clear. There is none of the unfortunate remixing that went into the later "25th Anniversary" U.S. release of the same album, which muddied the tracks with heavy reverb to create a 'concert hall' sound. The other main difference between the two is that the German version lacks the bonus "disco" remake of the main title theme. While that track is fun to listen to in all it's cheesy glory, it does not make up for the poor mixing of the rest of the album.

The original '78 soundtrack had only 16 tracks, not the 17 listed in the product description above, and the one dead giveaway is that the disco vocal "It's Love, Love,Love" is only included on the re-releases of the original album...not the much later Royal Scottish re-recording.

As I said, if you're looking for the original album as it was originally released, the European import is the way to go, but hold on to your receipt and check it out thoroughly before you open it, or you may be disappointed.

Ich entsinne mich noch gut dieser Science Fiction-Reihe aus den Achtzigern. Die damals verwendete Tricktechnik entspricht zwar nicht mehr der heutigen, aber das muß kein Nachteil sein, eher im Gegenteil. Manches Computer-Animierte von heutzutage wirkt doch allzu künstlich und inhaltsleer. Hier paßte die Musik zur Filmhandlung wirklich 1:1, und wenn man auf dieser CD die Klänge hört, tauchen vor dem geistigen Auge wieder die Bilder auf. "Sie hassen uns mit allen Fasern ihres Seins" ... das galt nicht nur für die Zylonen, das gilt heute auch für andere.
