I have read quite a few books about the Bayeux Tapestry over the years. When the opportunity came to give my old copy of this book as a gift to an up-and-coming amateur Medievalist, I took it.
But then I had to buy it for myself again. It surprised me -- but I missed having it on my shelf.
The images are outstanding. The explanations and translations are invaluable.
There are several competing theories for why the tapestry was created and where. This book alludes to them. But all those other books about the Tapestry range from the drily academic to the expansive and speculative. To some people, all the excitement about the Tapestry might seem like a bunch of 'fuss and bother' about an old (albeit large) wall-cloth!
This book INVOLVES you as the reader -- and as a spectator and participant -- it makes you love the work for itself.
This book shows you want all the fuss is really about.

Bayeux is a new obsession; I'm working on a couple of repro embroideries and it's fun doing the same stitches as those women did in the 11th century! The book is comprehensive as to history and photos.

What an amazing book for history lovers. Great images, and a respectable essay from the author, regarding the origins and influences of this unique piece of history and art. The book is very explanatory and the author gives you an interesting point of view about where the tapestry was made. The images are delightful, you get the whole tapestry in color and at a good scale, with translations and a detailed explanation.

great, informative, aesthetic

A little too scholarly and detailed for me, but absolutely the best pictures of the tapestry I've seen. Better almost than the real thing (which I have viewed), as a few were really, really close up, and you could actually make out the individual stitches. That made the whole thing come so alive. I do think the border has something to do with the main action.

The book includes a full reproduction of the tapestry sequence - an overview over 4 pages, with a full sequence of each scene then occupying (approx) a half A4 page taking 76 pages. Accompanying (under) the picture (plate) is a translation of the latin phrase is a commentary which attempts to relate to a historical context and/or event. In addition there are 80 pages of commentary about the tapestry (plus 6 pages of notes to the commentary ), including contemporary events, pictures of contemporary art, and highlighting the unknowns about its creation, as well as detailing its known history and restorations. In all useful for contemporary art & life, the Norman invasion as well as very informed information about the tapestry.

it is not the most colourful but it is an excellent reference book to dip into when the fancy takes ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 4, 2014Verified Purchase
I have only received this book today but felt compelled to write a review about it.
Firstly, it is a large book, with high quality images of the Tapestry throughout, including the whole embroidery and also close-up of the more important panels. In fact, we are taken so close that we can see the threads of the fabric, the restoration work and every stitch of the needlework. Beneath each image is the wording, translation and also a commentary on the points is interest in the work.
So, if that isn't enough, secondly there are over 80 pages filled with three column text , giving essays about various aspects of the Tapestry in an erudite prose (well translated from the original German). There are sections on the borders, who made the Tapestry, whether it was made in England or France, everyday life depicted, the expertise of the depiction of the armour and horses' bridles, to list just some.
It is not the biggest book on the subject available, it is not the most colourful but it is an excellent reference book to dip into when the fancy takes you when you can enjoy the pictures and read a short section; I doubt you would read it cover to cover in one go.
I am really looking forward to favouring this over many weeks.

Obtaining The Bayeux Tapestry by Wolfgang Grape was a life changing experience. I now understand exactly what Mr Grape thinks of all the theories about its origin and meaning, which I will apply to my own genesis and raison d'etre. All this fabulous validation plus a nice collection of colour plates makes this book as important to my existence as The Joy of Cooking by Irma Rombauer, and The Collected Works of Oscar Wilde. It is also the perfect size and weight to impress hipsters - and you can dance to it.
