About the Author

Martin J Brayley is a professional photographer and author, specializing in works on uniforms and militaria. He served in the armed forces for 24 years, and has a keen interest in all aspects of military history, particularly the uniforms and equipment of the 20th century. He is also a dedicated military researcher and collector and a regular contributor to the French magazine Militaria. He had had many books published by Crowood including The World War II Tommy - British Army Uniforms, Europe 1939-45 and Khaki Drill and Jungle Green - British Tropical Uniforms 1939-45.

Be Careful

Be careful with your purchase of this book. The issue is not the book or its contents. The book is well bound with hard covers, while the contents are wonderfully well illustrated with color and period photos. The problem is the subtle form of deception practiced with books oriented toward collectors by changing the covers. In '04 I bought the same book in soft covers for twice what Amazon is charging for the hard back version. The cover illustration has been changed, giving the appearance of a new book. I know that I should have caught the same author and left well enough alone, but I didn't. If you want to upgrade, this is a good deal on a good reference, but know what you are ordering.

Good Reference for Certain Types

First of all, this is a great book. It is well illustrated and contains numerous examples of different kinds of bayonets from all over the world.

However, the focus is primarily on bayonets from c. 1870-present, giving the older models short shrift in some cases. For example, in the chapter about French bayonets, there is absolutely no mention of any of the "Charleville" bayonets used by the French during the 18th and early 19th century and were also used by Americans during the American Revolution and later. In fact, these bayonets were the basis of the early American bayonets, just as the French Charleville musket was the basis of the American M1795 musket produced at Harpers Ferry and Springfield. Plenty of examples of these older bayonets exist (I've seen them; and not just the French ones), so I see no reason why they could not be included.

Just to summarize, this is a great reference book, but the information on 18th and early 19th century bayonets is lacking, which is why it gets 3 stars. What it does cover is easily 4 or 5 stars.

Great for Collectors!

Just started collecting bayonets and this book was recommended as a great book for novice bayonet collectors. It's oddly sorted by country, but it's great! Has all the info on Makers marks, proofs, etc. Exactly what I was looking for!

Tons and tons of high quality, glossy photos of bayonets and the men who used them. Large heavy hard cover, makes an awesome coffee table book or reference guide. Although its not as detailed or comprehensive as "Bayonets of the World", it is also a third f it's price and offers beautiful color photos instead of diagrams. Helped me identify and learn a lot about several of my own collection. Definitely would recommend. You won't be disappointed!
