Vanquish was a somewhat obscure title on the XBOX 360 that stood out primarily because of its unique "sliding" maneuver that aimed to keep combat frenetic and always moving. I had very rose colored memories of playing it on the 360 and jumped at the chance to see it spruced up for the PS4.
I played this on a PS4 Pro. As a rule I do not have my consoles connected to the Internet so my reviews are of the game exactly as it comes on the disc without any patches or DLC or whatnot. (I legitimately don't even know if there were patches or DLC for this game).
The game has a very minimal install size so thankfully you won't have to wait too long to get up and running.
Graphically the game's environments are very well designed and illustrated. The game seems to generally move at 60hz, though the cutscenes seem to drop below that, and there are occasional spots where the game seems to bog down, but nothing all that distracting. It's doubtful it would bother anyone who wasn't specifically looking for it.
Audio design is good, though I did encounter a couple spots where the console had to be reset to fix an audio bug where almost the sound effects from the guns was completely muted and the rest of the audio was muffled.
The narrative for the game was interesting, if a little cheezy in spots with character motivations that take archetypes to extremes and come across as anything from awkward to surreal. Very reminiscent of the Gundam Wing anime in that the majority of the backdrop is a space colony and the bulk of the story is heavily focused on a fictitious political and philosophical conundrum.
The action, pathing and pacing are very reminiscent of Halo or Gears of War where you traverse the battlefield from area to area, and each area functions as its own little arena with ammo, cover and weapons arranged to force you to think and strategize your approach. I found it so similar to Halo that I think it's fair to say this is exactly what Halo would have been like had it been develolped by a Japanese studio rather than a western one.
The sliding and time dilation mechanics definitely let you ride that edge between frantic and chaotic sometimes giving you and edge, and others acting almost like a handicap since your shield recharge is directly tied to your use of the energy required to perform the slide.
There are a small variety of weapons, of which you can equip a maximum of 3 at a time. As you play through the game enemies will drop upgrade boxes which can be used to incrementally improve the weapons, but similar to a shmup, if you get killed you start to lose upgrades and have to collect them all over again. This can turn some of the more challenging areas of the game into a downward spiral making them harder and harder to survive each time you fail an attempt.
The controls were very well balanced, and the aim assist never felt too intrusive.
Overall Vanquish was the same rose colored experience I remembered from 10 years ago, but a good portion of the reason that I didn't recall much from my original playthrough was the fact that the game is so short (4-5 hours) and (if you're really sensitive about partial spoilers , skip the rest of this paragraph) ends on a strangely unsatisfying note. I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger, but it definitely did not feel like closure or resolution.
Vanquish Remaster Pros:
- 1080p
- 60fps (mostly)
- tight controls
- cool backdrops and challenging gameplay
Cons
- audio bugs
- too short
As a huge fan of Bayonetta/Platinum Games, this collection does the PS3 titles an extremely pleasant service. Now boasting a full 60 fps experience and significantly faster loading times, this port improves on several of the issues that its previous iterations suffered from. Screen Tearing is no longer an issue during Bayonetta's high octane scenes and frame rate drops are very slim to none outside of a couple of fight transitions. There are a few audio glitches, however. For example, in the opening of the game sometimes the narrator stops speaking mid dialogue or weapons are muted after a few animations. The game also freezes during prolonged fights such as the Angel Slayer bonus verse. (Which is a HUGE no-no as the fight cannot be resumed after freezing and can take 1-2 hours to beat.)
Overall, its a great port but it does have a few issues that need to be buffed out via updates. The lack of additional content from the 2009 release is underwhelming but with an MSRP of $40 and a very cool steelbook design, it is a price that is well justified. This game is a must-have if you love Hack and Slash/Over the Top games.
However im annoyed a bit they didnt add extra content considering Bayonetta on the Nintendo Switch got exclusive outfits.. I personally woulda loved a Raiden-Skin in Vanquish, and if MetalGear:Rising ever got a ReMaster i wanna see the Vanquish suit as an unlockable...

Such a great deal without a doubt, 2 games ...enhanced and with a cool steel book for $40 bucks, no complaints.
