In Bayou Beckons, the reader gets to experience a change of scenery with the open vistas of the West and a few other locales. The book's main female character, Camilla Lind, has been hiding out as the result of a poor choice she made in her life concerning her sister's not so faithful former fiance. Sometimes the hardest part about your life is trying to accept what you've done with it.
When she meets Jared Richardson, she's attracted. But she's convinced, once she learns the details of his past relationship that her actions in her own past will prevent the possibility of a future together.
I like how the writer weaves in information about the locales and the habits and hobbies of the people who live there. You can tell she's done a lot of research on the factual aspects and how people of the area really live. I also enjoyed that the reactions and relationships of the primary and secondary characters have depth. They do seem like real people and relationships.
The conflict between the characters makes you want to read more to see if they are successful in overcoming the obstacles to find everlasting love. This book has some heat, yet is not super explicit. You also could read it without having read the first two in the series, but you'll want to read them.
I'm waiting to see what's next in the series.
I have to confess that I personally don't like the third book as well as the first two. This is partly because I was predisposed to not liking Camilla after what she did to her sister Branna, and partly because I prefer the south to Wyoming. I will say Ms Joyce's vivid descriptions make the countryside sound appealing and beautiful (and not dreadfully hot and dry like I remember.) By the time Camilla is on the bus with Haley I was impressed with her maturity and was anxious for her to return to the fold. I believe Ms Joyce's writing keeps getting stronger with each book. Her appreciation for family and the south certainly comes through strongly in her characters.
If you haven't read the first two books of the series, you will enjoy this book more if you stop right now and read them in order. Although the story of Camilla can stand alone, it is so much richer with the knowledge of her family history. Whatever you do, don't miss the opportunity to read this sweet series about some very determined southern ladies!
I hope this isn't the end to this series - the Lind ladies and their family are just too much fun.
Nice job Linda!
