Editorial Reviews

The Grammy-winning worldwide ambassador of Zydeco music is back again with a family dance party collection from the Bayou country of southwest Louisiana that pulls out all the stops... Smokin' accordion, rockin' Hammond B3 organ, rollicking rub-board and tasty guitar licks join together to create a musical gumbo of Creole culture that can almost be smelled and tasted.

Buck, his young friends, and some very familiar guest stars including LAURIE BERKNER, DAN ZANES, AARON NIGEL SMITH and MARIA MULDAUR guide children and parents through a mix of songs including some of the most family-friendly classic rock n' roll tunes - done in a Zydeco style as only Buckwheat can - plus great original songs that entertain and get kids moving while they teach. The result is a rich tribute to this unique melting pot of American culture.

Buck loves his home and culture in the bayous of southwest Louisiana. So what could be better than creating a party to get families movin' and groovin' to the music he loves, and giving them a little lesson in the rich Creole culture that is his roots?

Buckwheat Zydeco teamed up with Music For Little People in 1994 to release the beloved, award-winning children's album, 'Choo Choo Boogaloo.' Since then Buck says he hears all the time from fans young and old that 'I wore that album out when I was a kid' or 'that's how I got into Zydeco music' or 'we couldn't get in the car without my children asking me to put on 'Choo Choo.' Nothing makes him happier than hearing that.

This is the second album by Stanley ("Buckwheat") Dural on the Music For Little People label - one of my favorite kids' music labels because they license tracks from "grownup" performers as well as create totally knew releases aimed at families, but with music that adults will enjoy as well. In many cases these CDs can be a good way for parents to introduce their children to musical styles that will stay with their kids, as they grow older.

Dural - whose band is named Buckwheat Zydeco - is a big name in this accordion and rub-board based music from southwestern Louisiana. And this album is a lot of fun to listen to. Some of the songs were written by Doral - often with a spoken introduction, explaining to the young listener just what "zydeco music" is. The balance are not songs usually associated with zydeco bands, but rather "oldies" played with a zydeco beat. Rufus Thomas' "Walkin' the Dog" is from Memphis; "Robert Parker's "Barefootin'" is from New Orleans, and "Twist and Shout" come from the Cincinnati-based Isley Brothers. And then there is the "traditional" song "The Hokey Pokey" (which, though it's origins in the 1940s are still unclear, was copyrighted in 1960), which is a kids' music classic.

Doral gets some help on a few tracks from kids' music stalwarts Laurie Berkner and Dan Zanes plus Maria Muldaur (whose Jug band music for kids - which I like even better - was released by MFLP at the same time as this one.).

It's a fun album and a great way to introduce your children to this fun style of music. And I do recommend it to parents. But, I must point out for adults, without kids, who are looking for new Buckwheat Zydeco recordings, that this is not the standard hard-pumpin' Doral, but a somewhat toned down version.

The follow-up to Grammy Award-winning performer Buckwheat Zydeco's popular 1994 album "Choo Choo Boogaloo", Buckwheat Zydeco's Bayou Boogie is a delightful children's album blending accordion, organ, rub board, and guitar into an enthusiastic, joyful cacophony. Pure celebration from beginning to end, Buckwheat Zydeco's Bayou Boogie introduces young listeners to the musical traditions of the bayou as well as simply sharing a rollicking good time. Buckwheat Zydeco's Bayou Boogie is an excellent choice as a gift CD or for public library children's music collections. The tracks are "Loop De Loop", "We're Having a Party", "Barefootin'", "the Mice Ate My Rice", "Ripsy Dipsy", "Walking the Dog", "Everything Hurts", "Zydeco In Space", "Twist And Shout", "Hokey Pokey", and "The Party's Over". Also highly recommended from the "Music for Little People" label is "Maria Muldaur's Barnyard Dance Jug Band Music for Kids".

My 8 yr old squealed in delight when she unwrapped this cd for her birthday. She fell in love with Buckwheat Zydeco's music by checking out a CD from the library. My 4 year old sings along and so do I. This is a terrific CD with a unique sound.

I saw some great reviews about this CD so I had to check it out. Well the reviews were right on! Listening to this CD with my family made us all feel like we were at a rollicking party on the bayou complete with laughs, dancing and a some pretty interesting facts to boot! Buckwheat Zydeco delivers great music for the whole family (not just the kids) and it will certainly be on regular rotation in our house for a while! The songs are really creative and with guest artists Laurie Berkner and Dan Zanes you really can't go wrong. I will probably pick up a few more copies for holiday gifts... Don't wait - get to this party, pronto!!
