Toby Wright has always prided himself on being one of the most normal guys at Whitman University. He loves his parents, has a great job lined up after graduation, and with the exception of attempting to cross the unbalanced Sebastian Blair sophomore year, has kept his nose pretty clean.

But the rich never have empty closets, and memories long stashed away come spilling free when notorious party girl Kennedy Gilbert almost dies in his dorm room.

Nobody really knows how Kennedy manages to stay in good standing at Whitman–she never goes to class, doesn’t pretend to care about her future, and as far as people can tell, is never sober. This isn’t her first meeting with a stomach pump, but it is the first time she’s woken up to Toby’s concerned brown eyes. Despite the fact that she prefers life without friends, he gets under her skin with his insistence on playing her guardian angel.

No one knows better than Toby that people can only be saved if they want to be, but the realization that she has no one else draws him back into the shadows of Kennedy’s life–and eventually into her bed. But she long ago came to terms with a truth that Toby refuses to accept: she doesn’t want to be rescued, she only wants to forget.

About the Author

I've long had a love of stories. A few years ago decided to put them down on the page, and even though I have a degree in film and television, novels were the creative outlet where I found a home. I've published Young Adult under a different name, but when I got the idea for Broken at Love (my first New Adult title), I couldn't wait to try something new - and I'm hooked. In my spare time I watch a ton of tennis (no surprise, there), play a ton of tennis, and dedicate a good portion of brain power to dreaming up the next fictitious bad boy we'd all love to meet in real life. I also write YA science fiction as Trisha Leigh. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

This is one of my all time favorite books.

Kennedy is a bonafide alcoholic. But she's been that way for a while, so she's pretty good at hiding it. At pretending she's perfectly fine and just coasting through life on cruise control.

Toby knows better.

Toby Wright, oh how I despised you in BAL. How I thought you were weak... I was definitely under the wrong impression.

He has a lot of pressure on him to do well in school and keep a clean image. So, getting mixed up with a depressed alcoholic? Yeah, not an option. Unfortunately, life doesn't care about his dad's upcoming election. No, it cares about true love.

And that's just what Kennedy and toby have.

Kennedy has epic freak outs, but she's smart and has a unique way of looking at things. Toby has a major hero-complex due to past troubles. At first, he feels the need to save Kennedy for his own retribution. But as they have more and more run-ins, he realizes he needs to save her because if she destroys herself, it'll ultimately destroy him as well. So he puts a leash on her. Metaphorically, of course.

She needs a place to stay. Hey, he just happens to have a room all to himself. Stipulations? Kennedy has to stay sober and attend class. And she does. For a while...

Kennedy has a dry sense of humor and a tragic past, but Toby had suffered too ( though no one can know). Can they get through their grief together? Or will their player ways and/or survivors guilt ruin them both?

This book is amazing. Their is no insta-love, only real, heartbreaking, ground-shaking, ugly-crying, soul-searching, reading-worthy love, the type that has to built slowly, but unknowingly.

This is the best book by Lyla Payne sow fare. Its very emotional and heartbreaking. Where the odder characters have hade daddy issues or have made bad chooses, Kennedy have been emotionally abused by her crazy grandmother. She blame her self for surviving and don't believe she deserves to be happy because of her grandmother. Lyla Payne show us a different side of addiction as well. Sometimes it take over your live and you are the only one how can save you.

I have to be honest, I suffer from terrible Gossip Girl withdrawal. Fortunately, I have the new Lorde album and Lyla Payne's deliciously naughty Whitman U series to ease my shakes. Payne's characters are hot, and privileged, and tortured, and hot. Seriously hot. But they're still relatable, and they draw you into their stories and lives.
I've enjoyed the entire series, and I can't wait for Sam and Blair's story!

Going into this book I didn't expect to connect with Kennedy as much as I did and I appreciate that the author wasn't afraid to make her behavior really ugly and unattractive. She was never magically healed overnight. This was a really sweet story and I thought Toby was a real gem.

I just couldn't read any more. Who wants to read a story about depressed people with mental issues. Not me. And over half in and nothing exciting had happened. Not even a little drama. Just a story about depressed people and their young selfs having sex for only pleasure. Which would be fine but I didn't think it worked here.
