I was introduced to Shovels & Rope at a music festival where they easily upstaged the headliner. Then I went online and watched some videos of other live performances they have done. Then I bought this album and barely recognized some of the tracks. This album is part of a growing trend where technology is ruining music. I am completely baffled by some of the production and editing decisions that were made on some of these tracks. These are two of the most honest, genuine and talented musicians I have come across in a long time and so much of that simple charm is lost in these recordings. Go to YouTube and watch their studio performance for KEXP. Anyone who says what is on this album is better than what they did live in that studio is completely out of their mind. Their KEXP performance of Hail Hail is amazing and was the highlight of that performance for me. However, the version of Hail Hail on the album is easily the low point and is almost painful to listen to. This is one of those bands where simplicity is they key. Why would you pollute this music with unnecessary effects and instrumentation? I just don't get it.

Moral of the story, watch all of their live performances on YouTube and never miss an opportunity to see them live. As far as buying this album, I'd prefer a live version.

Take a chance on this disc. You will enjoy it.

These two have the art of entertainment down pat. They are upbeat, energetic, lively, and incredibly talented singers, songwriters, and instrumentalists. As well as a couple of super cool, down-to-earth, accessible people. The music is folk-rock, as many instruments as a two-(wo)man band can muster in a song. They write striking lyrics, funny lyrics, plain old folk stories. Lots of songs about outlaws. And who doesn't like a song about outlaws?

Since today's country music is bad version of rock and pop, I had to discover another style of music that had a country feel but without the dominance of blue grass influence. While living in Johnson City Tennessee, I discover the wonderful sound of folk music and I have been trying to discover great folk style of music and Shovel & Ropes was one of the first bands that I enjoyed purchasing for my collection. I love the contrast of the musician voices and the flow of the album.

This album is at least as good as their other collaboration - which is saying quite a bit. I caught the end of their set opening for Hayes Carll a year or so ago and bought three of their CD's (their self-titled collaboration, Cary Ann Hearst's "Lions and Lambs" and Michael Trent's "The Winner") on the way out. I've been kicking myself for not catching the entire set ever since. The albums have been three of my favorites this entire time. They sound amazing on their albums (both for Shovels and Ropes as well as on their respective solo albums), but are even better live - which speaks volumes as to their talent. I highly recommend all of their work to anyone who loves Americana. I only hope that they play near here again soon.

I'm a pop-rock girl who lives in the 70's and 80's, musically speaking. I've always snubbed my nose at "new music" because none of it is good. Until I saw Shovels and Rope on a PBS Americana Special. Who were these people that just started playing and singing like they just came out of the garden? I was fascinated and wanted to hear more so I watched them on youtube, then bought every vinyl, CD and MP3 download I could get (Cary Ann's two solo albums, Michael's two solo albums, their two albums together and even an appearance on a songs of the Civil War album). Hell's Bells, I can't get enough; they are my new, permanent favorites. The BOTH of them have INCREDIBLE TALENT! They make me feel something again and that is lacking in most music of today. I sure hope they decide to come to Illinois soon - I would love to see them live! I guess it doesn't really matter because I see them as worth a road trip in the near future so one way or another I am going to go see them!

I first heard these two on a TV program that featured "Amaricana Music." I was impressed with them and I think this is a very good CD. I was surprised, in fact, that I liked every song on the recording. I'd recommend it for excellent harmonies and or the style of music.

Great album but poor press quality. I loved the music but after sending back the first vinyl because of a crazy amount of warp, we received another that although less warped, still played poorly compared to my other albums.

If you haven't stumbled across Shovels and Rope yet, go buy everything they've recorded. Now. We first heard them at the Nelsonville Music Fest (in SE Ohio -- which, by the way, is just a killer sweet event). Then they came back to Nelsonville to do a gig at Stuart's Opera House. They are incredible. As good as their CD's are, in person they will just blow you away.
