When Cara Rutledge rents out her quaint beach house on Isle of Palms to Heather Wyatt for the entire summer, it’s a win-win by any standard: Cara’s generating income necessary to keep husband Brett’s ecotourism boat business afloat, and anxiety-prone Heather, an young artist who’s been given a commission to paint birds on postage stamps, has a quiet space in which to work and tend to her pet canaries uninterrupted.
It isn’t long, however, before both women’s idyllic summers are altered irrevocably: the alluring shorebirds—and the man who rescues them—begin to draw Heather out of the shell she’s cultivated toward a world of adventure, and maybe even love; at the same time, Cara’s life reels with sudden tragedy, and she wishes only to return to the beach house that had once been her port amidst life’s storms. When Heather refuses to budge from her newfound sanctuary, so begins the unlikeliest of rooming situations. While they start out as strangers, as everything around the women falls apart they learn that the only thing they can really rely on is each other.
And, like the migrating shorebirds that come to the island for the summer, these two women of different generations must rediscover their unique strengths so by summer’s end they, too, can take flight in ways they never imagined possible.

I don't know how she does it, but without exception when I read a beach book by Mary Alice Monroe, I feel like I am AT the beach. I mean…sand in my toes, the smell of salt in the air, the roar of the waves. It's just so real.
Cara Rutledge and her husband, Brett Beauchamps, both 50 years old and happily married for 10 years, are living the good life on the Isle of Palms, South Carolina. Cara has beautifully renovated and decorated Brett's small house on the other side of the island so it truly feels like their home. They have been sprucing up Cara's 1930s-era beach house, Primrose Cottage, in anticipation of a summer-long rental. And they really need that income, as money is tight with more bills than cash to pay them. The renter is Heather Wyatt, a beautiful 26-year-old artist, who is nearly agoraphobic. She suffers severe social anxiety and panic attacks, but she finds refuge—and possibly love—on the Isle of Palms. Meanwhile, tragedy strikes for Cara, and she retreats to the beach house in an unlikely arrangement: She becomes roommates with her renter. This is the story of how two women, who are reeling from deep and damaging emotional pain, find solace in the sand and ocean and in each other's care.
Bonus: There are lots of fun facts about seabirds, shorebirds, and wading birds, many of which are endangered.
This is the fourth in a seven-part series. While you can read this without having read the previous three books, I highly recommend that you begin at the beginning with "Beach House."
Cara picks herself up from a dark abyss with the help of friends and family to regain her former strength and tenacity. Her namesake, the loggerhead turtle, plays a role in her recovery, as does her beloved mother Lovie whose spirit wanders the house at night.
Heather overcomes her weakness, social anxiety, and emerges as a beautiful butterfly from the cocoon with the help of Cara, her new friends, and her first love, Bo. Readers learn about the plight of the shorebirds whose numbers decrease each year through the eyes of Heather and Bo. Heather, a commissioned artist, came to Isle of Palms to paint shorebirds for postage stamps. Her artistic descriptions of the waterfowl paint vivid portraits of her beloved and endangered birds. Lovie makes appearances to Heather as well in her dreams. By the end of the novel, Heather has transformed from a shy, insecure young woman to a more confident, outgoing, more mature one who has found her voice at last.
