That is the start that opens the door for a cavalcade of characters. A mayor, who, unbelievably as it may sound, has both guts and integrity, a chief of police, Charlie’s boss, who has neither, but instead he is an annoying, spineless fool, an almost child hooker and her brother-pimp, a billionaire who thinks that god is plagiarizing him because he can get away with anything with his money, questionable moralities women, a great Gatsby wannabe, crooked bartender, and a stunningly beautiful crime scene tech, to give you the taste on the backdrop of exclusive country clubs, priceless objec d’art, million dollar Italian sport’s cars, juxtaposed with abject poverty.
Crawford, with the help of his sidekick, ally, also-retired ex-homicide dick, originally from Cleveland, but going-to-seed, way up there in age, and overweight, soon discover who must be behind the murder. Then, the unheard, inconceivable, and unimaginable in this paradise upon earth, happens: another murder. Charlie’s hunch is that there is a connection. Unfortunately, no evidence that can lead to an arrest, although it becomes crystal clear who is doing what. Under the relentless pressure and taunting by the chief of police, Charlie reverts to his true and tried methods of using anyone of the 50 shades of gray of his interpretation of what is legal and what is not.
Of course, at the end the good guys prevail amidst extensive pyro techniques, fireworks, Charlie gets the girl, and the barely teenaged hooker’s soul is saved. But, overall, what makes this a great book and not just a run of the mill whodunit, is the cop language dripping with acid cynicism and a grand display of sarcasm. Because the next book in the series is already out, my advice to the connoisseurs of the genre is to run out and get a copy.
off on too many side stories, taking the reader away from the main Mystery, I understand the
author was trying to build a background for Charlie but it was a bit too much for me, and it
happened too many times, so I took off some stars for that...
There is NO detailed sex, there is some cussing, F bombs-a-plenty they did not bother me,
I just mention them as info. in my review in case others don't care for that.
For the most part the story is super good. I will read others in this series.
This one had, murder, theft of art, scams, rich people, poor people, 2 smart detectives, and
their boss is someone you won't care much for...
Interesting Characters in all.
Happy reading, I do recommend it...
